O.K, lets not get Dave upset by Dis' ing the Vickers Vincent. There are a few aircraft that are uglier. With a certain amount of trepidation (Beauty is in the eye of the beholder) Here are the leading contenders on the "Even uglier than a Vincent" List: PZL Wilga Feisler Storch Vickers Vildebeest ;D Bolton Paul Overstrand DHA Drover MS Rallye Zenith CH701 Wittman Tailwind Armstrong Whitworth Argosy (Both the prewar airliner and the postwar freighter) Most Helicopters you care to name Bristol Wayfarer (Super Freighter) Savoia Marchetti SM79 Britten Norman Trislander Add any others you wish - even pictures if you are really Sadistic!

Actually there's very few Armstrong Whitworth aircraft you could call good looking. What about the Whitley that flew in a nose-down position as a quick fix to a design problem....

The Stirling, and most (but not all) British aircraft from World War Two and before, and a few after, are gorgeous!

Airbuses! The A340 is probably the most elegant airliner ever built (except maybe the Concorde or :Dconstellation.... ) I will retract the statement about most British aircraft, as the Martin Baker MB-5, Spitfire, sea Fury, Vampire, Vulcan, TSR2, Britannia, Brabazon, Concorde , tempest, Sunderland, Saro Princess are all exceptions, most of the rest are just average. Although some manufacturers excell at "truely ugly"

Picked up the January issue of Aeroplane monthy from the booksellers the other day, it came with a bonus booklet with cutaways of "British Aircraft of the 1950s" and one would have to say the majority of aircraft featured could join the list - How about: Short Sperrin Short Seamew Edgar Percival EP9 Armstrong Whitworth AW52 Flying Wing (Yup that company again) Avro Athena Armstrong Whitworth Apollo (yup....) I would have to say that as far as looks go, some companies really wont be missed

Sounds like I'm getting out voted on the Baffin I still the proportions are .... well... "British" It has a lower wing of gull configuration, but only the lower wing. No one has made any effort to make the fuselage contours follow the engine profile, let alone give it a decent cowling (the Later Shark was better in this respect) and did anyone have any idea where the curve of the fin was going when they started drawing it?. I guess it did the business and functionality is the prime consideration of military aircraft, but shes not the most elegant of machines. Consider at the same time the USA was producing the Curtiss hawk Biplanes and the increadibly elegant Waco's (My personal favourite), mind you Vought Vindicators and Douglas devastators prove that the Yanks werent perfect when it came to attractive aircraft. (waiting for collective gasps of outrage.... Might get myself banned yet if I'm not careful
