Is anyone going to Armistice in Cambridge this weekend? I wasn't planning to go as I was hoping to go to Black Sands at Raglan, however on being lumbered with a whopping unexpected bill ($400) thanks to Podomatic ripping me off over the Wings Over New Zealand Show account, I won't be going anywhere. So I might scrape together a few dollars to go look at what's on offer at Karapiro. It might be a chance to see a few friends there, and to take some photos. I know Wally's going. Is anyone else making the trip? Maybe we can meet up. Here's a video that Allan Udy sent me from last year by the way:

I'm not making it this year despite being just up the road, I am committed to a company fitness fun day for a 5km walk while my son does the 5km run (he should be doing the 10km run) which he has won the last two years. Anyway, am also leading church on Sunday and eldest son is due home in the afternoon. The Orion flypast was particularly memorable and Dave Phillips and ZK-BEN skimming on the water top! So too were the other aerial displays. The re-enactors are always great for photographic material, and the Vintage War vehicles. It is a fun day, there is a huge No of book stalls and the models on display are wonderful - go and find Wally Hicks! And meet some other forumites...

They only have one actual Warbird in the line up this year, a Stearman, and all the other aeroplanes are homebuilds for some reason. As you may have guessed from that, I'm no longer involved with the organisation.

Well there were actually three Stearmans, in very open line abreast. The aerial displays as a whole were very dull indeed, all above 500 feet, all slow and quiet, and all simple flat circuits over the lake. waste of time from that aspect, and from most others. Definitely the least exciting Armistice I have been to, and I have been to all of them... at least i have nothing to do with this one so won't get the blame.

Wow that really does look like a Corsair. Even has the arrestor hook! (I think ours were removed). Wonder if it had an engine...........

In this regard, what were the three low-wing monoplanes in a roughly chevron-type formation which at 1003 this morning (Sunday 9 November 2014) travelled on an (approximate) E-W track, at around 3,000 ft height, circled over Cambridge/Kaipaki then (at around 1012) headed eastwards on a W-E path which seemed to be taking them towards the Dam end of Lake Karapiro.
From a distance (and seen only in silhouette), they appeared to be something akin to trainers of the Yak or Nanchang persuasion (or something similar) but due to distance and sun-related distortion this could not be verified. They were definitely NOT Harvards!! After travelling in the direction of Lake Karapiro, they were not seen or heard-from again.
Details anyone?

They were Titan Mustangs, all from Tauranga.

Rob and I popped down with another mate. We caught up with Mark down there. Just went down for the Sunday and am glad we only went for the one day. Last year was definitely better and have to agree that the aerial displays were pretty naff. Still had some fun taking photos of the re-enactors. willsramblingsnz.blogspot.co.nz/2014/11/armistice-in-cambridge-2014.html

I went on the Sunday, having read in the paper that the Navy would have a Seasprite helicopter there, but it was not written on the programme for either day and it turned up missing as the Irish say! The public were duped. Our genuinely pathetic Navy were there again with their two RIB's going out every couple of hours to throw and retrieve their dummy. The announcer said "There you are folks, the NZ Navy at its best" My friend and I just looked at each other on the double-take and said simultaneously "I hope not, if that's the best they can do,'
They didn't even have Navy "corporate" vehicles to tow them; just a couple of un-badged Toyota utes. How embarrassing for the crews who were allocated the PR duties at Karapiro for that weekend.

You're right about the Seasprite being advertised but not showing up, and absolutely not a mention about it from the tannoy.
Mind you their Facebook page also promised tanks and an airshow, but there was no tanks and no airshow. Just a couple of homebuilds doing flat circuits high above the lake in open airspace flown by pilots without display authorities. Really disappointing after last year where we had an absolutely cracking low, loud and fast warbird airshow form the Mustang, P-40N, Dakota, Pitts Special, Orion, Grasshopper, Stearman and the star of the whole show, the water skiing Tiger Moth.
For me the only highlights of the weekend were the 1/3 scale Corsair, seeing Jack Godfrey's Scout, and catching up with several friends who I haven't seen in a while. The rest was old hat and a duller version of previous years.

Is there a proposed (permanent) display location for Jack's Bristol Scout?
