A companion for a flying-pencil being utilised as a kids' plaything in a paddock in the middle part of the North Island, perhaps?

Actually... it already has been with the Metroliner!
TZL is the last of the CityJet Bandits left in NZ, one of my former charges from my time as CJ Maintenance controller. Its a bit sad to see it in that state considering how good it was when we brought in in from Australia. Was worth a lot more then! In service it was actually the most troublesome of the fleet to look after since it was a much later model than the others, and many of our spare parts werent compatible. It has Collins Avionics as opposed to the Kings in the other aircraft, which gave no end of problems. It was used for passenger work despite its munted interior since Ansett put a restraint of trade on TZN which meant it couldnt fly scheduled pax despite its better fitout. It would be nice to see it preserved however, but to get it to a decent display condition would be a nightmare.

It's a bit of shame some of these turboprops which have served our air routes for decades just disappear with no preservation. Maybe one day we will look back on them and wish we had preserved them, as people now look back on aircraft from the golden years.

There is one preserved in Andy Moreland's collection near Cambridge - Eagle Air's Original ZK-ERU

I think "preserved" might be a bit generous. It's not in the greatest condition sitting out in the elements.

Is that the Bandit that was operated by Eagle when they merged with Air Central?
If it is, I flew in that from Gisborne to Napier a couple of times.

No, ZK-TZL was with Transglobal from mid-1997 when it operated as Cityjet, and then passed into Eagle ownership April 2000. With Eagle it just sat at Hamilton to be parted out and was cancelled December 2000. Was this the one someone had at Palmerston North, and posted details here on how they were going to convert it into a boy's bedroom?

I was actually replying to the post about ZK-ERU, but Dave slipped a reply in just ahead of me.
