Should this capability come to pass, then acquisition is likely to be announced at this decade's end, with introduction from +/- 2025.
A one-LHD task group would include one Hobart destroyer, one Anzac frigate, one submarine and one replenishment ship.
Task group numbers cannot be fixed, as ship availability and the specifics of tasking come into play: to suggest otherwise is just armchair admiral stuff.
The same applies to any embarked air group. With Tailored Air Group methodology - adapted by the ADF from the Poms for the LHDs - the number and mix of aircraft is wholly dependent on many factors, although it's worth noting that the minimum critical mass of embarked F35s would be six.
That would allow a 2-ship over the group 24/7.

Some pics from initial underway flight trials, near Jervis Bay. One MRH and one Seahawk embarked.

Reported AFR today: PM's jump jet shelved - PM Abbott's proposal to place 12 F-35Bs on the two Canberra Class LHDs were quietly dropped ahead of the Australian government's defense white paper. Abbott ordered defense planners in May to examine the feasibility of operating F-35Bs from the 27,000 tonne troop transport/helicopter platforms. There were judged too many modifications to enable jump jets to operate from the Canberra and Adelaide. Aside from having to order additional F-35Bs to the 2nd tranche of 58 F35As already ordered ($AUD12.4 billion) for the RAAF (bringing the fleet to 72), the modifications required included; "..new radar systems, instrument landing systems, heat resistant decking, restructuring fuel storage and fuel lines, and storage hangars." In light of an already ballooning $AUD275+ billion procurement list, the modifications have been deemed too costly and providing insufficient cost-benefit to pursue to just join the club of nations fielding F35Bs from Assault ships.

Interesting idea...would be neat to see western a/c using a skijump. 😊 This concept seems to depend on more power from new engines in the SH as part of block III. I hope the RAAF upgrades the fleet for that. They will really want the conformal tanks for better range.

I dont think the Canberras will be long enough either way:

I guess it then begs the question, how would a Hornet land safely on a Canberra class ship?

Given the classic hornets are on the way out of service, they could manage 50 or so launches without a recovery if they were pushed :-).

Gives rise to an interesting question, how many more performance can you screw out of a hornet if its only got to last another 2 hrs?
And in the same vane what was omitted from the CAM hurricanes?

No interest what so ever, Canberra has a13 degree ramp I believe testing is taking place on s 12 degree didn’t sound like much but the forces st work are extreme on the airframe, there’s also the little bit about recovery of the aircraft Whilst I believe we have a define need I think the only chance we have is a bargain of the century from the UK, with there fiscal woes I think the chance of that happening are getting greater. If they were prepared to let go RFA Largs Bay to save 12 m a year imagine what they will save long term on haveing a single CV
