Just as big a problem is that as soon as anything happens those people sitting on the fenceline stand up! Why? from their seat they were getting a good view and the people behind could see the action, as soon as they selfishly stand they immediately block the view of the second row.
Although this is a bigger problem for me (being short of stature) there is no reason for it if they are in the front row.

We were down the eastern end of the crowd line near where the T-6C on static display was parked. There definitely were large shades erected right on the fenceline similar to the green gazebo type structure to the right of the yellow marquee Dave was talking about. I have no problems with them being to the rear of the crowd area, but obstructing the view down the fenceline is selfish and shouldn't be allowed. Mmm tricky what about that compared to the size of the Large green umbrella on the far left. The rule would have to be any item on the fenceline which blocks the view of any adult person of normal stature standing behind the etc etc. whheee good luck on that one. Make a statement, make it part of the T+C's of entry, clearly say it on FAQS and make it clearly signposted on the entry gate and in the crowd. "For the consideration of others no shade tents, sun umbrellas or any other structures above head height/5ft within 10M to the fence/beyond this point" or something to that effect.

The reason is if you are sitting you are usually looking through the fence at anything low or near the ground.

I think you have to accept this is a standing area and people just sit to rest between periods of standing.

I was not talking about anybody else's view in my statement, it inhibits the view of the user! I'm puzzled as to why this is an issue, when without knowing personally the owners of the shade tent we are reduced to making assumptions about why are they are there and what they are doing. Not everyone at an airshow is there to look at aeroplanes. They might be there to meet people, have a day out with their partners, friends and families, see one thing in particular on the air or ground with no interest in anything else, any number of non-enthusiast reasons. If someone wants to sit in the shade the whole day and read a book they are fully entitled to - my wife did exactly that at Omaka one year, and it didn't affect hers or my enjoyment of the day one iota.

If you want to sit there all day with an uninterrupted(ish) view get there early and get your own spot on the fence.

The eastern end resembled a refugee camp on the Saturday I know this is tongue in cheek Dave but actually it Looks to me like a whole heap of people having a grand old time socialising and enjoying the atmosphere as well as the flying. At the end of the day they would be say wow that was fun lets do it again in the future. Not crikey the rules and regualtions were all a bit of a pain lets spend our entertainment Dollars elsewhere.

Cricket and Rugby games put restrictions on what sort of stuff the embankment crowds can bring in. Just needs a guideline to remind people to be considerate.

OK I have tested the waters enough with my confrontational banter to gauge the opinions here, and it seems most of you out there are quite happy with these large and small shades, so it's official - at the next airshow I am bringing a 60 x 20 shelter to park in a prime position and will rope it off so only selected WONZ members can come and join me in it. I might also have a beer mini tanker in there carefully disguised under a small windbreak, and some comfy couches. And yes, there will be an elevated platform by the fence for Shorty to use

Sounds Great can I book 2 for Omaka please. Hey did you just think up this little debate or did someone like an Airshow organiser get you to have a wee straw poll?

I will bring a flat deck truck trailer, disguised as the "other" camera platform park it on the fence line and have one of those tent thingies nailed at one end filled with beer and deck chairs..... That way you can be 4 foot tall and a clear view..

Hey did you just think up this little debate or did someone like an Airshow organiser get you to have a wee straw poll? I thought it up myself while at Wings Over Wairarapa after continuously walking AROUND that big yellow monstrosity tent which for a lot of the day was an island in the movement stream, even if the photos I took late in the day don't show that.

There should be something in the ticket conditions about not inconveniencing others, which can be called on to deal with real pains. Guy wires in random areas would appear to be an unjustified safety risk, and subject to taking down, and immediate removal from site on disagreement. The stress management of volunteers is an issue, and I wouldn't expect them to do much unless unless it is dangerous, or very annoying (to punters who have complained).

I found it a little difficult to get a good position to watch the show with all the tents and in some cases aeroplanes in the way of the display line. Found a good spot on the free grand stand which was brilliant. Perhaps they could look at providing more of these...especially since they have all the TVAL shows throughout the year as well....would get a lot of use.

Two years ago, at the KA114 send off, I regularly used the free Bleachers they setup close to the Mosquito midway down the southern fence line - got a good view of the banking planes then too.

The stands are not used at the TVAL Flying Weekends. There was no extra infrastructure at all in January. I think a safety rope was mentioned previously? We were just told to stay on the concrete pad.

I think the grandstands are owned by the Drag Strip organisation.
...and a kiddies paddling pool to soak your feet in...
...and a trampoline...
...and a stripper pole...

Tell me, was it three or four extra steps (out of the thousands normally taken walking around an airshow) you had to take to walk around this monstrous edifice
