Just latched onto this thread, but so far as I known, no member of the P-39 clan has ever flown in NZ, and certainly not in WW2. The closest ones flying to NZ were the P-39Ds of the 70th Pursuit Squadron, which flew from various fields in Fiji, and the P-400s (RAF Airacobra Is) of the 67th Pursuit Squadron in New Caledonia; both squadrons eventually departed for the north (Guadalcanal). However there were visits of OS2Us (Kingfishers) in WW2 NZ, both with ships on floats, also land-based ones. David D

The 70th Pursuit Squadron did pass through Auckland after leaving Fiji, for R&R, before heading north to the Pacific. There is a book on that squadron and it shows members of the squadron outside the Civic Theatre in Auckland. However I don't think they brought any aeroplanes.

Graham Orphan has reminded me of some other downunder Bell fighters, "the approx two dozen P-39D & Fs /P-400s operated by the RAAF, 23, 24, 82,83 Sqns." He was surprised they had not been mentioned here.

The Tony is here: Should we have a standalone thread for it, mods?
