Interesting to see it all exposed like that. Is this the one damaged by the quake while hanging in the Atrium?

Dave, this is the two seater T11 , going follow up on its maintenance, the aircraft in the Atrium , I must check out and see if it has quietly been repaired , lucky very little damage to it , slight knock as you may know .. this Vamps was a major feature simply going thru a strip down and clean up.
One question I asked , the thought in displaying the aircraft with the engine shroud off , .. If requested they will remove it but once cleaned up its back on the floor in its complete state.

Regarding the atrium Vampire; while attending the 75 Squadron reunion in May/June last year a couple of us were given a guided tour of the museum. Our guide, Simon Moody, told us the only damage suffered during the earthquake(s) was to the atrium Vampire when a cable broke which allowed the aircraft to swing free. The damage was a slightly crumpled tip of the starboard tail boom below the rudder when the aircraft swung into a concrete pillar. Asked if it was to be repaired, we were told it wouldn't be and would be a lasting reminder of the earthquake.

Damage to the tail boom fairing on this Vampire (the tail boom structure proper was not damaged, it was the lightweight aerodynamic fairing which copped the hits as alluded to in the previous post) was repaired by the Museum's metal expert, the one and only Sam Fraser. David D

Good ole Sam , funny Just as I was heading out 'Barf' walked in all battle damaged, Sam go's racing for his camera, loves this sorta thing, 'Barf' had this gadget connected up on his lower arm that made him look like the 'Terminator' , course ole Sam, his metal skills come up with an idea off turning the gadget into a sling shot

A confession. The earthquake damage suffered by the FB 5 Vampire is STILL present, as alluded to in an earlier post. I mentioned to Sam yesterday morning that his name been referred to on this site, and he immediately put me right. Seems as though I have confused an incident of several years ago when Sam told me about the repair of damage suffered by the Museum's Canberra (the RAAF B.20), although he himself did not undertake this repair. This damage was caused by an outside contractor driving a vehicle within the aircraft hall a little carelessly and hitting one of the wingtip fuel tanks. So it was Simon Moody who knew what he was talking about, and me who didn't! I am now going to sit in the naughty boys' corner for one hour, wearing appropriate headgear. David D
