Air Contracts' hangar in Masterton was burnt to ashes, along with (at least) C180s BFE and BMX.
There were possibly other aircraft involved, but I tend to think incomplete - Pawnee BZD maybe as its cancellation date suggests?
Seems like yesterday........ Dakman can share memories of this event too.

Was it an accident? Arson? Electrical wiring issue? Lightning strike? Dropped cigarette?

I came to that suspicion since no-one has stated the actual cause and seem a bit cagey...

It is a bit odd no-one knows/is willing to post the cause. 50yrs on!

Don't recall ever hearing what the cause was, but don't think it was suspicious. It was mid-evening on a Saturday.
Dakman? Kiwithrottlejockey?

Don't know. MAT was Arson, FAL, some of the staff had been working on fabric on a Super Cub and left the heater on accidently overnight. Super Air was lost because of the Aeromotive hangar next door caught fire. Another fire that destroyed a topdressing plane as at Rotorua Airport.

Keith Trillo's Avro Avian was lost when his little hangar on his property was set ablaze by a grass fire that spread from the neighbouring property. There was a big hangar burned down at Milson too wasn't there?

Never heard how the Air Contracts hangar fire started I was living in Pahiatua then. In the topdressers theres a photo of Fred Myers and Tom Withy in front of a no smoking sign puffing away, in side the hangar front door .Bit casual.

In the days of the Tiger, a fag after starting the engine was about the right time to let the engine warm up. One form of ignition is dope soaked rags dumped in a pile in the corner of the hangar/workshop, these can cause spontanious combustion, of course it all depends on whether someone was doing a fabric job, maybe a few days before the fire. isc
