Hooray!! After years of searching for the vital clue, I finally have confirmed written, published evidence that Sir Charles Kingsford Smith and his famous Fokker Tri-Motor "The Southern Cross" did indeed actually land his aeroplane here at Cambridge, New Zealand! According to this article the tour was extended whilst the aircraft was in New Zealand in 1934 to include visits to Cambridge and Dargaville. Yes! paperspast.natlib.govt.nz/cgi-bin/paperspast?a=d&cl=search&d=CHP19340126.2.107&srpos=47&e=01-12-1912--12-1945--10-CHP-41-byDA---0Cambridge+airman--"The original plan was that the tour would be suspended at Auckland on the evening of February 1, but an extension has now been decided on, and she will visit Dargaville and Cambridge on the following weekend, returning to Auckland in time to allow Sir Charles to catch the Maunganui at Wellington on February 6." That narrows down the visit to either the 3rd of 4th of February 1934. I will now have to update the page here: www.cambridgeairforce.org.nz/Kingsford%20Smith.htm

My father went for a flight with Kingsford Smith. He lived in Ngruawahia so it must have been somewhere in the Waikato. He never went any where near an aircraft until he flew to Australia when he was in his 70s. He never liked me flying.
