The last few percent left to be completely stripped was on the belly. It just waited until the rotisserie was available. That paint will be gone in the morning. Most would have just slid off and dropped to the floor. The Tomahawk is just so easy to work on. Look at the engine bearer frame attachments for example. The rotisserie picks up on the same points. No crawling around and groping about with these things. The NACA ducts allow access behind the panel and the top bolts. The bottom ones are just as easy. Pull a couple of body plugs and the bolts are right there. Here is a pic of another aircraft showing the adaptor attachment points. And while the rotisserie is in use elsewhere something else to mock-up.

The bulk of the paint removed and with the fuselage on it's side the underneath can be cleaned up. No corrosion under the ADF loop antenna (not getting refitted, nothing under the Transponder antenna. The aileron centering spring looked sus though, - the securing nut was rusted rounded... Noticeable corrosion under the washer arrangement but all expected and easily dealt with. The tail tie down is removed next and that area was fine also. The data plate down the rear had a dose though as indeed most seem to have. The stripping will be finished after lunch but that can keep while the corrosion removal is going on. The is a little corrosion creeping out from some of the rivnuts just to the rear of the spar. The belly fairing covers them but to get the job done correctly they will be drilled out now. It is easy enough to pop a few rivnuts in again after the repaint. So he is doing the worst part of the job this afternoon. Crud removal and surface preparation. At least access is not an issue and the dozen or so areas can be placed directly under your nose. Indeed the entire surface can be cleaned and treated in the best possible light and comfort attitude. I think we are looking at the PreKote scrubs in the early evening, or perhaps even earlier. The fuselage will be going into the paint-booth this evening to dry overnight. It is just a matter then of laying on a couple of thin coats of the Strontium Chromate primer tomorrow. *** EDIT.... UPDATE ***

Could be Day Glo, or Black, or maybe both! That will get away from the camo in a big way. isc

I don't get much of a say in the final scheme but with a black empennage and white wings the options may be pretty limited. I think we dodged a bullet with the camo scheme though. I am thinking of a 2015 type scheme adapted to a Cherokee 140 for another of the rebuilds going on here. I think it would be novel to see a similar style on the Tomahawks. Not my call on this one however..

I remember seeing a Tomahawk in RAAF "Fanta can" colours like the CT/4s. Go on, you know you want to!

Yes, I remember that scheme also Zac. Actually I was around the back of the house the other day and spied one there. Seems it has been there for 5 years or so, since Wigram closed. I did some work on it last week so have seen much of the paint scheme over that time. It hasn't grown on me yet but I guess if you had a fleet of them, all sparkling and all. My one looked a little like this in happier days.

26 degrees in Christchurch at lunchtime and will be warm all night and into tomorrow, The paint stripper loves warmth and shade so... I guess it took about an hour to spray everything and brush some on to a few panels and windscreen strips. The pics were taken once I had finished and not shown are the doors and fin. The stripper on the fuselage had been working for between 40 minutes to an hour before I picked up the camera. While I had the brush in my hand I touched the area in the centre of the glareshield/coaming area, the paint just pushed to one side... still in a sheet. The bond between the paint and the surface just lets go so it is a strange reaction compared to those other strippers that just turn the paint into a gooey mess. I plan to run a nylon scraper over everything about 6 or 7 pm and then hit it with the waterblaster. The scraper will gather all the waste up so it can be placed into plastic bags. Very little mess really. I will learn from the job on WAB the other day and not even attempt the belly areas until the fuselage is in the rotisserie.

By the time I had got there after lunch NZjet had the markings all nutted out. Both sides marked out and into the booth for masking. The gold is probably much more than the washed out silver I am seeing in the pics. *** EDIT *** More like the gold in this Cherokee (F Sim) that inspired the scheme.
