Great news but is four going to be enough? Should we be procuring A330 MRTT as part of the strategic lift replacement to extend the duration of the P8 and be a force multiplier? There were (according to the DCP2019) also looking at long range Drones to help off set some of the work load as well... However I can not see this happening now as with th current fiscal situation and the shelving of the SOPV for the navy I can see other cut backs being made... as defence is the first place they look to cut back on... (and now is not th time for this now is the time to increase... well that has be for a long time but now especially)

I guess it’s a like for like now that we’ve retired two Orions before the first P8 is even assembled. Does anyone know why this capability gap has been programmed in? The Navy suffered an even greater capability gap between the decommissioning of the Endeavour and the arrival of HMNZS Aotearoa.

Probably exceeded by both frigates offline simultaneously for their upgrade in Canada.

At least they were somewhat upgraded and not cut, but somehow i think that would be a point too far considering the treaties in place

I wonder where that leaves the future 35 concept and the JATF (Joint Amphibious Task Force) HMNZS Canterbury with either a LPD or small LHD
Enhanced Sealift Capability
197. Acquisition of an enhanced multi-role sealift vessel to
complement HMNZS Canterbury will occur in the late2020s. The ship will be able to carry more people, stores
and equipment, and will include a docking well, allowing
the ship to be able to operate in a greater range of sea
states, including those typically encountered around
New Zealand and in the Pacific. It will also support the
same or a greater number of embarked helicopters as
HMNZS Canterbury. An example of the class of vessel
that could be considered under this project is a Landing
Platform Dock.
198. The new sealift vessel will provide greater support
and sustainment of humanitarian and disaster relief
and security operations in the Pacific, and increased
support to civil defence and emergency management
domestically.
Indicative dates:
Industry engagement commences – 2022
Request for tender – 2024
Introduction into Service – 2029
Indicative capital cost:
More than $1b

Hopefully you will order another 3/4 P8, would like to see the RNZAF order 4 MC-55A Peregrine Me thinks you will also need to order more OPV to monitor future Chinese fishing vessels in the not to distance future

Te Whare Toroa - the home of the Albatross... nice touch. It translates to The Visiting House. I doubt anything will ever be given an English name in NZ again.

How about calling it the P8 hangar or Posiden hangar. That way we can all understand it
