This story came my way a couple of years ago , via a Tauranga friend , and we dismissed it on the simple basis that the closest aircraft were possibly in Australia and there being no record of those ever being lost over here . I think we concluded there was something not right about this story . Possibly the plate came from a WW11 British or European crash site ?

Upon reflection - and now that it's been a while since this was posted - Gavin, how trustworthy is the source of the plate? Just a thought.

I was talking with Gavin about this very topic last weekend at Raglan.

Out of interest's sake, this is a Junkers diesel engine. Pretty distinctive shape. The Junkers badge is the wee blue triangle on the front. Musee de l'Air 140

Hi Dave, Nope. The Friedrichshafen FF 33E "Wolfchen" was powered by a Benz engine and it returned to Germany with the ship in 1918. We can rule out Great War era as Junkers' first aero engines were upright six-cylinder petrol engines first run in the very early 1920s. The Junkers F 13 postwar airliner, which was a prolific beast was powered by Benz and these Junkers sixes. I suspect that we can probably rule out an air crash. It's highly unlikely that a Junkers aircraft could have made it to NZ and crash without any record of it being here at all. As for a clandestine flight during wartime, again, sheer lack of evidence precedes such a thing.

Yes, I agree. But it remains intriguing.
