Does anybody know what the new dc3 (Ardmore) paint scheme is going to be?. Or have they decided not to go ahead with it.

My understanding is the Dakota will probably be painted into a scheme that is white on top, and silver underneath in a shceme similar to the postwar RNZAF VIP aircraft, or NAC scheme. But I heard it won't wear markings. I don't know if this is true. It certainly is well overdue for a new coat of paint. I don't know why they are changing the scheme as it's rather iconic. But I guess with a blank-slate white scheme it could be easily mocked up for certain events such as the upcoming NAC tour, and next year's RNZAF 70th Anniversary in different appropriate schemes. Perhaps an email to their site may answer the question www.nzwarbirds.org.nz/dakota/index.html

The paint scheme you've described sounds similar to what I've heard as well Dave. The current scheme, while certainly iconic, gives some prospective customers the idea that the interior is purely spartan WW2 with steel tube and canvas seats bolted to unlined bare metal walls. Without trying to state the obvious, as with most things nowadays money is a big issue, especially when it comes to keeping a vintage airliner airworthy, so if extra revenue can be gained by giving an uninformed few the impression that the aircraft is set up for VIPs and not a stick of paratroops then I guess a change of paint is warranted. Of course, this is just my view based on what I've heard and does not represent any official views. Cheers, Stu. p.s. www.dc3.co.nz also takes you to their site and is quicker to type

This evening I watched an old video i found in my late Dad's collection, which has 40 minutes of home video that my uncle took at the 1987 Whenuapai airshow, the 50th Anniversary of the RNZAF airshow.
Apart from a lot of stunning aircraft and great displays I noticed ZK-DAK in its original colours before taking on the current D-Day scheme. It was silver beneath, white top, and had blue and orange cheat lines (I guess left over from the previous operator?). It also had the words 'NEW ZEALAND WARBIRDS' on the fuselage. It still looked stunning. I love that Dakota, such a star. I'd love to see the old ETA Ripples adverts again.

Yep, DAK is a true Kiwi Icon. Should look good in blue and white trim. Be awesome if it was to have a polished aluminium underside, but I guess some poor sod would have to polish it regularly and no doubt it wouldn't be good for the airframe to sit unpainted in the Auckland air.

Looks like it will be RNZAF VIP scheme? www.pnairport.co.nz/news.php3Facelift for 62-year old Dakota Warbirds Dakota 27 October 2006 Warbirds Dakota Society's aircraft ZK-DAC has flown in to Palmerston North for a repaint and servicing. Within an hour of the plane touching down on Wednesday, work had started on waterblasting to strip off the existing old war paint scheme. It will emerge in about a month with the livery of an RNZAF VIP aircraft. The refurbishment is being undertaken at Fieldair Engineering, and at the present time makes an added attraction for visitors heading towards the terminal.
