What five aircraft would you really like to see join the New Zealand warbird circuit? I'd like to see: - A Harvard in the 2SFTS colurs of camouflage top and yellow undersides and sides, like the Wigram example, only flying. Why has no-one ever done that excellent scheme on a flyer??? - A Canberra in RNZAF colours - An A-4K Skyhawk (team... ) - A Lockheed Hudson in RNZAF Pacific colours - A Vincent in RNZAF colours

I have a dream.............; a lotto win of sufficient proportions to buy one of our Canberra B12s back from the Indian Air Force.
It would be nice to see one of our own again.
Never happen of course, I doubt they're still flyable.
I recall a few years ago, the former cruiser HMNZS Achilles, sold postwar to India and renamed the Indian Navy Ship Delhi, visited Wellington, and given her history I just had to visit!
Everything was presumably very much as built, with the exception that everywhere you went there was that very distinctive smell of spices and curry! One of her turrets id in Auckland by the way!
Probably trained on the Auckland Regional Council offices...........

That must have been quite a few years ago as I believe Achilles was scrapped in the 1970's. As well as the turret, other bits made their way to Motat. However on my last visit I didn't see them and wonder if they still exist.
I think the Canberra B.12's are all grounded and I'd be surprised if we ever saw one return home - I think some have been scraped too.

Is that one of the turrets from Achilles at Davenport?
I'm sure I took a photo of the turret while I was up in Auckland in April. I'll see if I can find it.

I don't know if there are more than one turret around off the ship, but one was mounted in a big concrete tiered memorial at Motat 2. I can't recall seeing that though last time I was there and wonder if it disappeared when part of their land became a dirt farm, or lawn farm or whatever they grow there.
I think the guns outside Auckland War memorial on the hill are also from Achilles, aren't they?

Anyway.back to the question now. What planes do you want to see on the circuit. On my second thoughts I'd scrub the Canberra down to No. 6 and ask for an Avenger.

I think the gun turret is with the Radar direction finder at the Navy museum in Devonport. The guns at the museum I believe were ww1 vintage and came from the old cruiser Philomel(could be wrong) In WW2 they were removed in case they attracted a Jap bombardment of the museum as some sort of defence complex...

Nice choices Craig. We may see a Hind or two in the next few years I hope. I'd love to see the Ventura too but little chance of that I think.

Just had a thought - I had put a single seat Vampire on my list, how about flying it in tight formation aerobatics with the two 2 seaters currently flying - just like the old 1960s Jetabatic team the National fil unit made the movie of. You could also get Grant Biel to dust of ZK-VNM and tuck that into no4 postion, with a decent video camera in the nose mount (Thats why the Mk4 has the extended nose) and play the footage live to video screens on the ground... seems do-able to me....

Beagle, the Mk 1 Anson is being restored to fly at Wakefield, near Nelson. The word is it will be based at Omaka when airworthy but this isn't confirmed I don't think. The project is quite advanced and I believe the owner has two Anson airframes.
