The Wings Over New Zealand Show presents Episode 98: Wings Over Australia - Ian Whitney. In this episode, in the Wings Over Australia sub-series, co-hosts Dave Homewood and James Kightly interview warbird recovery expert and restorer Ian Whitney. Ian talks about his background in aviation and how he got into the unusual field of recovering warbird wrecks from the jungles of Papua New Guinea, and other places around the Pacific War theatre. He also talks about the restoration of his own Curtiss P-40N Warhawk, and its USAAF pilot. www.cambridgeairforce.org.nz/WONZShow/2016/02/woa-ian-whitney/

By the way, this episode is well worth a listen to, but from a kiwi point of view especially so where Ian is talking about the captured Japanese aeroplanes that the RNZAF had, and also the wrecks of RNZAF fighters and bombers still up in the islands now!!

I already posted on the Key forum, but will do so here too: growing up on a steady diet of Classic Wings Downunder magazines I am very familiar with Ian's name and work, so I'm very excited to hear this episode. I'll be back as soon as I've listened to share my feedback.

Great episode. Mr Whitney sounds like a great guy to have a beer or two with. I hope you bought him a couple after that interview.

I just listened. Another great episode - Ian is such a "bloke", I love it.
Until the last quarter-hour or so. Hearing about the various RNZAF wrecks/airframes....I was practically tearing out my hair with impotent excitement! Someone needs to get to those 44gal drums and get some Kiwi machines! Amazing!
Thanks to Dave, James and Ian for a fascinating, hilarious and agonising episode!

Informative and funny interview. Even had the Kookaburras going in the background. Thanks.

Absolutely awesome. Finally got to sit down and hear this. Well done. Now to have a way of getting these relics out. Without ending up as pig stew. ??

And bring some of them home to New Zealand too! One has to ask the question then. Why has not Wigram Museum tried for at least one of those broken winged aircraft Lol. Surely they must have known about them? If not then something is not right. It can't be that much of a secret.

Um, I think it has been kept pretty quiet till now actually. We're very fortunate that Ian has chosen to share this information with the WONZ Show.

Oki Doki then it shouldn't be long then.... say 10 years??? Sorry but wouldn't the RNZAF have records of such things. Or was that dumped. ( Not trying to be smart here just asking that's all)

You'd have to ask the RNZAF but I seriously doubt they have any clues these days. They probably thought these aircraft were handed to the US forces or something similar.
