I've finally managed get around to converting one more of the Grandfathers 16mm movies to digital media, this one covers Top dressing trials by the RNZAF with Avengers cira 1948 and then of a Bristol Freighter on loan from the RNZAF to SAFE air around June 1954 (I've sure people know more about these events than I do.) Lastly there is some footage of a ZK-ASA (Tiger) carrying out top dressing I would guess circa 1954 as well. The Avenger and Bristol were all at Hood aerodrome and it's likely the Tiger was around that area too as that's where my Grandfather was based. (Ex RNZAF photographer and then ran a photography business in Masterton, and later Agfa) Sorry no sound. Hopefully it's of interest to people

what an incredible film record - the quality is amazing! It has great views of the Bristol Freighter hopper installation and the Avenger loading system. The Tiger Moth Loader operator in his torn singlet and the many small boys climbing all over the equipment in the Avenger trials are a great touch!

Credit must go to Bring it on Studio's for the excellent conversion, but we were lucky that most of the film collection is in great condition, and the quality was pretty good to started with my Grandfather knew what he was doing. Hopefully more coming, wading thought the films is a slow process!
It was a big event apparently, the are period newspaper articles online saying there were large crowds.

Absolutely brilliant!
I'd love to know who some of the individuals are, and where the Tiger footage was filmed.

You know, we could probably add a soundtrack to that. We could easily find or record some Avenger, Freighter and Tiger Moth noise...

Ahhhh my favourite aeroplane. Interesting that NZ2503 (with the wrap around black and yellow stripes) taxied up and shut down (you wouldn't get kids rushing up to an Air Force aircraft with the engine shutting down like that these days!). But then she turns into NZ2504 (now on display at Wigram.) You can see the Popeye nose art on her starboard engine cowlings. Great footage alright!

Can make copies available if people wanted them. I have a DVD version I could copy as well. Bloody marvellous Daniel, thanks so much for sharing this history with the world. It's wonderful! That Avenger hopper is an interesting device! No problem Dave happy to share, there are boxes of films but slow process wading though them and this 13 min's cost $250 to convert. A lot of them are Family movies and I'm sure no one here wants to see my Mum age 2 sitting next to herself (my Grandfather being clever without the aid of Photoshop in 1950!) haha Ahhhh my favourite aeroplane. Yes I think there was some editing by my Grandfather - but looking at the record of the event they had two Avengers for the days work so the turn around was faster, you see both at the beginning when one is coming in to land. Does anyone know if ZK-ASA is still about, sure the owner would like this.

The Australians had a Bristol Freighter operating in the late 50s, early 60s. It did not operate long due to the cost running it. I believe they were only carrying 5 tons, when really they should have been carrying a lot more. Airland NZ Ltd brought the loader to NZ and used it for the DC3. I drove it at Galatea.

Hey Daniel, do you have many photos from your grandfather's RNZAF Photographer days? What was his name, by the way?

Henry Hope-Cross (hence the HHC, and H Hope-Cross present at the start of the movie ) and yes / no, there is a truly awesome album of RNZAF photo's from all over the country during WW2 however it is now "missing" I'm hassling everyone in the family but I fear it maybe lost forever, I had my hands on it once about eight years ago....gutted I let it out of my sight. I have the odd photo, I'll dig up what I can...family dramas etc. it's like herding cats at times I did post an earlier movie, filmed in Blenheim during WW2.

From Wairarapa and Ruahine Aero Club notes in NZ Wings 5 Sep 39: Aerial Photography – A short time ago Mr. Hope Cross, of Masterton, took a number of photographs of Pahiatua and Dannevirke from ZK-ADL. The views are to be exhibited in the District Court at the Centennial Exhibition. Presumably the same man as NZ422109 Henry William Hope-Cross who enlisted at Harewood as a flight rigger on 20 Mar 42? Errol

Absolutely superb bit of ag aviation history. Educated guess would say thats Tom Withey, founder of Air Contracts in the centre, and Pat Boyle, early pilot on the right. Another guess would say Norm Black?,on the left, also involved in setting up Air Contracts, with Tom Withey. And judging by this gentlemans dress of 2 jersey's,he's most likely a Tiger Moth pilot and is possibly Fred Myers?. You would think the Tiger Moth segment is taken around 1950,and obviously somewhere near Masterton.

Does anyone know if ZK-ASA is still about, sure the owner would like this. Tiger ZK-ASA has reverted to its pre-war registraion of ZK-AFO, and last I heard is with the Galpin collection. It had some recorded incidents during its time as an agTiger, but seems to have survived them.

You may need to request a free copy of his RNZAF service record from Personnel Records, NZDF, Trentham to obtain the details.
