Nzmonty, I have requested two in one year. One was a Grandfather of mine, the second a month or so later, was the father of a friend of mine I requested on her behalf. I had birth and death dates and places of address, but it was still free for second search. Took three months for a reply second time. Have a go!! Thanks, I'll give it a go, talking to my folks is sound like he might have been a rigger to start with after all, seems he was conscripted to the Army and wanted to be in the Air Force so took what ever was on offer....looking forward to getting the records now!

When I was at Te Rapa in the mid 70's I was doing some research through the Waikato Times archives and I came across a newspaper report where a group of farmers were investigating buying some surplus Lancasters in the UK, bringing them back to NZ with the idea of using them for topdressing the hill country. NOW that would have been a sight to behold! Needless to say the idea did not come to fruition, more's the pity. They could have called themselves the Dam Dusters! Errol

They used a Lancaster in spreading trials in the UK,they filled paper bags with superphoshate and loaded them in the bomb bay.The bags when dropped were supposed to burst on impact and spread the fertiliser. I would think they only tried it once.

Cool that you've identified Bunny. I hope he gets a chance to watch. Sweet I know his son Andrew. I will let him know asap. Ok Bunny Burrows Father of Andy Burrows has now seen the you tube clip with his son,( Bunny is not in good health.) He thinks it is him in the Nav position. Unfortunately it was a very quick flick of film. BUT I now have a copy of a section of Bunny Burrows log book for these trials at Masterton. My problem is I can't figure out Bloody Photo*uckit.

Hi Monty, these films are fantastic! I just finished writing a chapter for my Ceres book describing the development and growth of ag aviation in NZ... Of course I covered the RNZAF trials, working from magazines, newspaper articles and previous authors. But seeing film of the actual trials was just incredible!
Any chance I could use a couple of screen grabs from the film in my book? With full attribution to your grandfather of course!
Regards, Derek

Hi, Yes of course I'm sure we can sort something I can get some higher res images from the HD video if you like. PM me. As a side, spent a good chunk of the weekend watching some pretty boring silent films, and some cool ones, about to drop about a 1/3 of our films in for conversion (gonna hurt the bank balance) but there is some aviation footage in the pile Sadly, some of the other aviation films have been parked for round two. Saw some early ZK-ADT footage, up the two glaciers and some more Dragon footage. Also found a negative film from the RNZAF, need to find out what I can do with it, sadly is was wound wrong so, it was upside down and backwards, and neg so quite hard to watch. Looked like some Hudson cockpit footage, but the film kept breaking so we stopped. I'm hoping the awesome folk at Brind-it-on Studios can help. Watch this space

Another quick note to the RNZAF top dressing trials. When we were restoring Avenger NZ2504 at wigram in the mid 1970s, during a clean out of the fuselage in the tail area, (also trying to track the rudder trim tab cable for a replacement job) I came across a reasonable amount of fertilizer that had worked its way into the tail area during the trails. Fortunately, being an anodized frame there was no corrosion

What a marvelous and prescious film of early ag flying. Brilliant little piece of Aviation history. Are copies going to be available ?? Congrats for saving it !! Can make copies available if people wanted them. I have a DVD version I could copy as well. Bloody marvellous Daniel, thanks so much for sharing this history with the world. It's wonderful! That Avenger hopper is an interesting device! No problem Dave happy to share, there are boxes of films but slow process wading though them and this 13 min's cost $250 to convert. A lot of them are Family movies and I'm sure no one here wants to see my Mum age 2 sitting next to herself (my Grandfather being clever without the aid of Photoshop in 1950!) haha Ahhhh my favourite aeroplane. Interesting that NZ2503 (with the wrap around black and yellow stripes) taxied up and shut down (you wouldn't get kids rushing up to an Air Force aircraft with the engine shutting down like that these days!). But then she turns into NZ2504 (now on display at Wigram.) You can see the Popeye nose art on her starboard engine cowlings. Great footage alright! Yes I think there was some editing by my Grandfather - but looking at the record of the event they had two Avengers for the days work so the turn around was faster, you see both at the beginning when one is coming in to land. Does anyone know if ZK-ASA is still about, sure the owner would like this.

I have just found this on a quick google search of my grandfather Tom Withey. You were right with which one he was in the pics above. I would love to get a copy of any old movies you have with him in it. This would be amazing as a record of our family history.

ADMIN NOTE - I have merged a separate thread on the same topic into the existing thread.
Interesting Video of the trials at Masterton in 1948 and 1954 with Avenger '03, Freighter'04 and Tiger ZK ASA all being loaded and doing test drops in the good old days when there were kids milling around and to hell with spectator safety rules

Great historical footage! Yes OSH would have a heart attack if they saw the kids around the aircraft during the unloading and loading operations. I also noted that in the first sequence one of the ground personnel moved into the Avenger while the prop was still turning; another no-no in the modern world. Look at the shiny finish on NZ5904, nicely polished

I recall when I worked on 04 (at the museum) there was significant amounts of super around the wheel well, but no significant"rotting". I found more degunging the Beaver.
