Correct. NZ5648's wings are clipped now but they were not when it was at Rukuhia. I understand they were either modified in the US rebuild or a set of clipped wings installed? Maybe they planned to race her at Reno?

I missed this post somehow , after a look at a few FG-1D photos the metal outer flaps can clearly be seen. When you mention the rockets and the fabric it makes perfect sense. Those suckers must have made a bit of fireworks when fired.I remember back to when I did my basic years ago and we were learning about the "66" or LAW if you are a Yank - Back blast! Now I just have to find a kit to rob some rocket stubs off Yes agreed those rocket stubs/pylons are a weak point in the kit. I used a set from an Accurate Miniatures TBM-3, they fit the bill perfectly. One thing to be aware of which I didn't know at the time was the outer flaps were metal skinned as was the lower panel where the stubs mounted. Something to do with rocket flash and burning fabric!

Thanks heaps for the kind words Anthony - means a lot after seeing the quality of your builds.
I only lightly weathered this one , the belly tank and small bits were fitted this afternoon. Just a bit of aerial rigging left to go and She is done.
My bench looks a little like Asplins yard at the moment with the bits of several Corsairs and Ventura in various states of construction.

I understood the clipped wings were from when it was in the UK painted as a FAA example. This aircraft has never worn Fleet Air Arm colours Nev, that was a different Corsair on the UK circuit, The Fighter Collection's G-FGID. While in the UK as G-BXUL this one wore it's Big Hog scheme, then the RNZAF scheme of NZ5648 (with variations made to the colours over time) and then the current mish-mash US scheme. And the clip wings were fitted in the USA long before it got to Britain. It was bought be Jim Landri and Pat Palmer, of Seattle, WA, who owned it from 1973-1982. They rebuilt it at Payne Field, Washington, making its first return to flight on the 17th of July, 1982, registered as N55JP.

Hi there, I've posted here two or three times, however I've realised just now that didn't introduce myself properly, so I'd like to say Hi to the Wings Over New Zealand forum, I'm Mark and I have scanned a color photo of Josephine from David Duxbury's book Aircraft of the Royal New Zealand Air Force. I remember reading somewhere long ago that the Corsair's wings were clipped by Jim Landry for the purpose of air racing when it was being restored in the US. It didn't happen and the wingtips have remained clipped since then. It would be good tho to see the full wingtips on NZ5648 again however I also remember reading somewhere else that Keith Skilling who flew it said that the clipped wingtips definitely helped make the corsair a bit more manouverable and added a bit more speed as well! If that's the case, might as well leave the wingtips as they are.... Here's Josephine at Rukuhia

Reading want Mark has written ties in with what I was told when I asked about the wingtips at a TVAL open day - that they aren't really FAA wing tips at all, just a mod (bastardisation, I think were the exact words) done at some point in its stay in the US.....

(#99) during the early Seventies and apparently the big-engined, super streamlined Corsair was going to be called "Really Gotcha!" (also #99)! I think the new engine was to have been a Wright R-3350 but I'm not sure. I've started a new thread on the AAFO forum seeking info. What a magnificent restoration. I am still embarrassed about my earlier desecration in 1967!
