DC-3 ZK-AWP is due to start its summer scenic flying schedule from this Saturday. These $99.00 flights of 30 minutes usually go from Tauranga Airport and up to Waihi Beach. On Sunday we are also having an all U S A Day Car show. Previous such days have attracted over 200 such cars. Entry will be $10.00 per family or $5.00 per person. Four lucky winners will be given tickets to go for a fly on the DC-3. Quite likely the restored Avenger, NZ2539, will attract attention as well. It should be a busy day! Here's hoping for fine weather. On 29th November we are expecting to also have DC-3 ZK-DAK at Tauranga on a charter flight. I shudder to think when was the last time two DC-3s were together and active at Tauranga, possibly not since the NAC days up till 1970.

Unfortunately ZK-AWP is not now serviceable and so will not be in attendance at Tauranga this weekend. Hopefully it will be flying next weekend. The All USA Car Day will be going ahead as planned.

Look what arrived outside our hangar yesterday afternoon. We are all wondering where this might fit and when we will get time to start the restoration. I understand that all of the control surfaces are missing so if anyone has any ideas of where we might locate any of these please get in touch. Any thing will be considered as starting from scratch is a very long exercise. 250621 (4) by Mike Feisst, on Flickr 250621 (3) by Mike Feisst, on Flickr

Three members of the team are now working full time on the Islander fuselage. This is being sealed up as much as possible as I gather that it might end up on a platform out front. These three people are getting experience at what can be done with some thoughts outside the box. Does anyone know where we can get some blue polyurathane foam sheets. We are missing both wingtips and one tail tip that we need to create somehow. 160721 (7) by Mike Feisst, on Flickr IMG_3746 by Mike Feisst, on Flickr 160721 (6) by Mike Feisst, on Flickr IMG_3747 by Mike Feisst, on Flickr IMG_3748 by Mike Feisst, on Flickr

Reminds me of my story about flying in an Islander. Two years back or so, we were going to Stewart Island and were waiting at the airport. We had been waiting quite a while and were wondering when the pilot was going to show up, another 'passenger' arrived and we finally started walking to the plane, to our surprise that 'passenger' (Who was carrying a plastic bag full of beer) proceeded to hop into the Pilot seat along with the hoodie clad Co-Pilot! The entire flight they were talking about what they were planning to have for Christmas dinner and hardly had their hands on the control columns! Having not flown often it hadn't occurred to me that smaller operations can be much more casual. It made for quite a memorable flight (Even the landing felt hair raising) and thus Islanders hold a special place in my heart.
Glad to see one getting preserved!

..snip... Does anyone know where we can get some blue polyurathane foam sheets. We are missing both wingtips and one tail tip that we need to create somehow. ...snip.. How much do you need? I have a couple of small sheets approx 400x700x50 that have dodged the cleanout. If they are anywhere near close enough in size I can get more accurate measurements.

Any size would be a help and I was thinking along the lines of 50mm thick anyway. I will PM you now.
