So....did those of you attending Warbirds Over Wanaka enjoy your “supersonic practice day” today? 'cause that's what STUFF is labelling it. I kid you not: CLICK HERE and read for yourself in the very first paragraph. Nice photograph of Bill Reid, Dave Phillips and John Romain in front of the Anson accompanying the article, though....

Great photos Errol!
Any idea who's flying Dove of Peace and given it is the 30th Anniversary show are they re-creating the Empire of the Sun scene as Ray Hanna did at Warbirds Over Wanaka '96 in tribute to the late, great man who along with son Mark were Wanaka stalwarts?

So it rained overnight, but only the occasional spit now. Got t-shirt and patch from the yanks, just to help the beer fund.

Damn, no injuries, Yak-3 ZK-YYY hit a hoist while landing on the grass. Starboard wing badly damaged, prop intact.

B757 then Hawk 127 displayed while ground unavailable (NZDF helis use it). Harvards just took off. Not sure if grass cleared for use yet. @warbirdswanaka: MEDIA ADVISORY FROM WARBIRDS OVER WANAKA, 11am: A Yak 3 warbird has been damaged after landing at Wanaka Airport during the opening display at Warbirds Over Wanaka. The aircraft, owned by a Wanaka pilot,... t.co/ocIsI3ZWhZ

The pictures on Stuff and other news sites aren't pretty, so glad Arthur's okay! A cherry picker?

Well bugger me with a pitch-fork... The two Yaks are a highlight for me. You've got to seriously question the wisdom and logic of parking a cherry picker on an active runway! Was there a NOTAM? I've never seen anything as unforgiving as that at any air show anywhere...

Cherry pickers positioned between seal and grass runways. (For landing competition target).

That is utterly bizarre - until I saw the video I was thinking perhaps it was a runway excursion or groundloop that had turned into a collision with an obstruction but from that video it looks like they were pretty much right on the very edge of the grass strip? Or given a lot of people are saying they were "between" the seal and grass strips was the Yak not on the grass runway? Really sorry to see the damage to the plane but glad to hear no injuries, that was a pretty solid hit...

We rarely get to see 'Dove Of Peace' but she is a good looking bird! Great to see the exhaust staining etc left on and not polished off....

couldn't the yak have seen the obstacle on/beside the runway/strip?.Its not a small item and obviously hit it about 1/3 in from the wingtip.

The view forward is restrictive on most of these types regardless how big an object may be on the ground if it's not immediately apparent and not on the side you happen to be looking it can come at you very quickly. I think we need to keep our armchair opinions to ourselves and enjoy the rest of the airshow.
