We had a great day on Friday and the team have now managed to get the wing fold system working as it should. With the painting virtually complete we pushed the aircraft out of the hangar after lunch and had the wing extended and locked within minutes and she made a great sight. The aircraft artwork for this aircraft will portray two different aircraft. On the starboard side will be 'Plonky' and on the port side will be 'We never Miss'. A big 'Thank You' to Marty Cantlon for all of his work on the Avenger with all of the insignia being hand painted on and during the build, all on the stencil work he has performed, that has greatly enhanced the presentation of this restoration. JESUS THIS CANNOT BE THE SAME TBF from Riverhead !?!?!?!?!?!?!

Here is a photo of the the day I first saw the aircraft and I must admit I was wondering about the strength in the centre section and whether it would hold the outer panels. I would have to say that the whole team are proud of the work done on the old girl and great to see her out on the taxiway whn we give her a run up. I have received this photo from Susan Tracy this week. She is the granddaughter of the late Arthur Baker, a Cambridge airman who features on my Wings Over Cambridge website, here. Susan had kindly looked out a couple of photos for the page, and a little bit of info for me. Whilst looking she found this photo. As it is a plane, she sent it. Is this NZ2539 while in the playground at Rotorua? Or is this a different one? Note the Donald Duck artwork on the tail!

Very nostalgic photo Dave, I also used to play on this big beasty as a young lad. It was bloody high & more than a bit terrifying! I recall getting shoo'd off after another lad slipped of the leading edge of the port wing and broke either a leg or an ankle... easily done and of course well before the days of OH&S!

I was thinking when I was looking at that photo, I wonder how many kids came a cropper falling off it.
It also must have gotten very hot in the summer.

For the record; the last four existing RNZAF examples were for long periods: NZ2504 Te Rapa before Wigram, NZ2505 Opunake Beach before Gisborne, NZ2527 Kuirau Park, Rotorua before Motat and NZ2539 Havelock North before Riverhead before Classic Flyers at Tauranga Airport.

NZ2505 Opunake Beach before Gisborne That aircraft went from Opunake to Silverstream in Wellington for years, then to the RNZAF Museum at Wigram for a very long time, before it was loaned to, and eventually gifted to, Gisborne Aviation Preservation Museum.

NZ2505 had a few more temporary homes - Opunake beach to Paraparaumu airport, then to Gracefield and finally to Silverstream. Whilst it was at Gracefield , I helped the owner at the time ( John Regan) carry out some repairs including a large repair on the RHS behind the entry door. Whilst at Gracefield, the wings were stolen and sold to a scrap yard - luckily John found them before they were cut up.

Thanks Curtiss and Dave for expanding on 2505's history. I knew about Silverstream having seen it there. I was being a bit lazy and economised in my above wording. Very lucky that the wings were retrieved. This is a good example of where reader's add in their two bob's worth and in so doing, expand a history.

"Hi Dave You might like to add to the NZ2539 at Classic Flyers thread. Ken Jacobs was on site watching and listening. Cheers Peter"
