Sounds like a few heading over that way. Many years ago there used to be local farmers who rented out fields near both DX and Fairford to cater for tent dwellers. They'd charge 10 quid a night and provide showers as well. I remember one trip to Fairford I hitched from Swindon to Fairford and got picked up by an American based at the airfield. He dropped me at the entrance. The camp ground was literally across the road. Got up first thing and before all the crowds arrived, at 7am us campers were the first on site. Great for photography.
If I can remember correctly, there are shuttle busses that run from the railway stations at Swindon and Cambridge to the respective airshows, but the last one out of DX leaves before the show finishes. If driving to Fairford, the best thing to do is arrive nearby the night before, so it isn't too much of a faff trying to get in. Access used to be notoriously bad on show day and I remember one year some friends and myself hired a car; we saw only half the show on one of the days we went because of the queues to get in. Luckily we had local accommodation and were able to walk to the show the next day.
I used to have to get down that way from Scotland, so had extra miles to cover, but made for good adventures, stopping at museums and other sites along the way; Newark Air Museum and the Yorkshire Air Museum at Elvington were favourites and good places for refreshement stops, with detours into Lincolnshire for a nosey.
Farnborough is also on round that time as well, if anyone's interested in the latest aviation hardware. Easily accessible from London.

Well.... looks like I'm heading to the UK now for this and RIAT! Working out the details with a travel agent now for a UK / France trip including these.
Pain that they are on the same weekends. Currently looking at heading to RIAT on Fri & Sat, Flying Legends on Sun.
For those that have been / are going.... any recommendations on accomm and best way to get from RIAT to Flying Legends? Looks like hiring a car is going to be the only way?

Looks like hiring a car is going to be the only way? Good news mate! Have you been to Duxford before? If not can I suggest you reverse your plan & take in Legends on Fri / Sat & RIAT on the Sunday. That's what my mates & I are doing (did both shows in 2011 & that was over 2 weekends) Remember at Duxford you have the amazing museum, the restoration hangars, the USAF museum and the armour museum. To visit Duxford & do any sort of justice to what's on display you need more than one day. RIAT will be full-on but I reckon a solid day will nail it I think it is over 2 hours drive between the 2 places - we will hit the road from Dux on the Saturday arvo after flying concludes so we are at Fairford raedy to be at RIAT when the gates open. So yes, a car is your best choice I'd say. Accommodation-wise... I booked ours 4 months ago and even then some of the good spots were sold out so don't delay. We are staying at the Ramada Cambridge, still a couple of rooms left and showing as $88AUD today so reasonable for the area. Ramada Oxford for our RIAT accommodation which is around 30 minutes away from RAF Fairford - again they show a couple of rooms left at $102AUD which is cheap for the area. To be at these shows to be part of the RAF's 100th anniversary celebrations will be something very special. Good luck with the planning

On the subject of multiple shows on the same weekend I see Shuttleworth have an evening show on the 14/7/18. From what I can make out only a 40min drive from Duxford to Old Warden. Probably do-able but would it be worth while to pop across to Old Warden for the evening show after Saturday's Flying Legends? Have a hire car but not familiar with traffic or roads in the area, can't find any information as to when the Shuttleworth evening shows start, long twilights so I guess it could go quite late, would be a big day! www.shuttleworth.org/events/july-evening-airshow/

It is on the way to Oxford with a minor detour

For everyone planning to travel to England for the airshows, especially Flying Legends at Duxford, Keith Skilling told me the other night that he'll be in England for their summer season flying the Hurricane once again, and he said if anyone here spots him at the airshow, feel free to come up and say gidday. Keith reads the forum and would welcome meeting other forum members.

UK traffic is bad enough on a normal day! getting out of Duxford after Legends will be a nightmare...

The ex Alpine Fighter Collection Hurricane P3351 has joined the fold, that's four Hurricanes now and if the Shuttleworth one pops across that will be five, here's hoping! www.facebook.com/FlyingLegendsOfficial/
