That is the first time I have seen that footage of the actual crash. I was in Aussie at the time so only heard about it.

Qwilton Biel sent me this news footage about 10 years ago. It seems an appropriate time to upload it, given the discussion. I had read that the driver of the car had lodged an insurance claim due to damage by debris from the passing Venom, I don't know how true that is. Wow how lucky for all concerned, wonder how close the car actually was?

Great photo Don, thanks for sharing it!
I'm not sure how close the car was but it must've been a bit of a surprise to the driver!

I was actually at Ardmore the afternoon this happened, and having first heard a report, headed out and was on scene at the location. I can remember being amazed at the track the aircraft had taken through the ploughed paddock etc and ending up in the trees area. I understood it actually did become airborne but only just enough to clear the Ardmore fence and just high enough to clear cars on the road. John Denton had an extremely lucky escape, and by the time I arrived had been taken back to the Warbirds club rooms for a cup of tea. It must have certainly given him something to think about for a night or two. I recall being amazed by how relatively intact the airframe was, considering its path. It was liberally covered in retardant foam. Co-incidentally, I met JD when I had an opportunity to be instructed by him in ANZ's 747 simulator out at Mangere. Lovely guy.

A photo recently surfaced on Facebook of J-1634 at Whenuapai, having been paint stripped, ready for reassembly. Note the Swiss nose avionics frame/mount is still fitted. The photo is care of Paul Bryant who has allowed me to share the photo here. J-1634 ZK-VNM reassembly ©Paul Bryant by Jason Mills, on Flickr
