A work in progress...not a bad little kit of a very unusual topic by Mikromir...quite detailed, but not for the beginner. the original clear sprues were rubbish, it took me a month to order and aquire a new set. I have to say the Aerovan was a pretty functional but ugly aircraft! miles2 by Harry Follas, on Flickr miles by Harry Follas, on Flickr

I believe the British designers had several forms of competition running amongst themselves.
One would have been who could actually manage to get the ugliest design put onto production.
Another would have been for designing components to make access as difficult as possible.
I could just imagine the raucous laughter and mirth generated at their annual meeting.
The guy that did the mounting of the fatigue meter on the Hunter did a superb job. We had to clamber up onto the wing with screwdriver, torch and mirror. Once the panel was removed you could read the figures, upside down and mirror image.... absolutely brilliant !

I wondered how long it would be until one of these appeared here. Nice work so far, Harry!

Regarding "Quirky" designs...interesting bit of history regarding the Aerovan...the French liked it so much they nearly started their own licensed production run, figures really!

Harrysone........just have to look at all their pre-WW.II designs and apart from a select few, every one of them were both ugly and festooned with every drag producing device you could imagine.

You can't help thinking even if the Aerovan misfired on one cylinder it was coming down!

You can't help thinking even if the Aerovan misfired on one cylinder it was coming down! To look at it you would think so, but apparently not. My great uncle (Flt/Lt. J D Washington) was piloting one over the central North Island when a propeller flew off one engine!.... Evidently, it was quite a feat of airmanship, but he managed to safely get himself and the aircraft back to Ohakea.

Is your Great Uncle still around today Pepe? I wonder if any of the RNZAF Aerovan pilots are still alive? It would be interesting to hear their personal perspective of it.

No, Uncle Jim died a few years ago now, Dave. Unfortunately, he had only just started writing his memoirs which would described a very interesting military and commercial aviation career in the Pacific, New Zealand and Australia.

Actually.....think it looks far more attractive that way. Interesting device those retractable floats.... wonder how effective they would be...

I'm guessing that the flying boat version was not going to have the big cargo door at the back end?
That is not the worst looking flying boar design I've seen either.
