You are correct about CCG being largely ex NZ2417 (with wings off NZ2409) but none of the photos I have show the lettering you describe.

Yep - my mistake sorry. I typed it up in my registration book incorrectly about 50 years ago and the mistake waited all this time for it to publicly surface. It was indeed NZ2417. The cause of the dive Antonio was to give the glider a full performance work out. It was on its very first flight. Sadly, for what ever reason, he did not follow the golden rule and position himself well clear of the tow plane before building up speed. Look at aviation-safety.net/wikibase/29626

For some reason, my memory keeps telling me that the McDonald/Fechney Mustang CCG was previously NZ2417, with that number carried in very small (red?) characters under the small (carburettor?) intake, just below and behind the spinner. Is my memory defective? Yep Memory correct
