Recently, I've been enjoying looking through these forums in an effort to find information about Taieri, Weedons and Te Rapa, during the period 1958 - 1963.
As part of the 'Assisted Immigrants Program', my parents came to New Zealand (along with others bound for the Army, Navy and Air Force), aboard the TSS Captain Cook.
Having previously been enlisted in the RAF, they sailed from Glasgow with my father arriving into Wellington on Good Friday 1958 and my mother, on the very next voyage, a little later in July 1958.
My parents met briefly, for the first time, at Taieri towards the end of 1958 (during Basic Training) and were destined to meet again at Te Rapa, the following year. They served there between 1959 and 1963, were married in Hamilton in 1960 and went on to have six children, of which I'm the only one living in New Zealand. The family sailed back to the UK in January 1967.
I'm trying to find anyone who might remember them, or who would have been either at Taieri, or Te Rapa during this time-frame, as my father, Eamon 'Edward' Patrick Kerr, is coming back to New Zealand, next month, for the first time in nearly 60 years. sadly, my mother, Margaret Jean Kerr (Robbins), passed away in 1992.
At the moment, I'm researching every aspect of their lives here in New Zealand, with a view of presenting the information to him when he arrives. He is now 82 years old.
I’d like to know what life was like on the bases (as well as the sailings) and one of the roles of which my father was most proud, was to serve on the Taieri, Te Rapa, RNZAF and Combined Services football (soccer) teams between 1958 and 1963.
Is there anyone out there who may also have been involved in these annual inter-station and inter-service sporting tournaments, as well as matches against regional football teams from the period?
Any help will be gratefully received.
