I am putting together as much infromation as can be made available, for a display at the South Canterbury Aviation Heritage Centre, about (information, personalities, photos etc) this company which was formed in Timaru in August 1920. Our group is trying to sort out preparatory work in relation to the upcoming centenary of NZAT, New Zealand's first airline, in 2020. Can anyone out there help out please?!

Correct, Paul. I was just checking my G-NZ register and not the earlyNZ one.
Airco DH9 H5609 - DBR in crash landing at Timaru 8Jan22 @ 13hr20min with NZAT. Stored at Washdyke. To NZPAF as spares?
Looks like it was damaged before the civil allocations were made.

Next year marks 100 years since the start of New Zealand Aero Transport Ltd. I was just talking with Brian Wigley, the grandson of Rodolph Wigley who founded NZAT Ltd. As it was New Zealand's first airline, he is keen to see the 100 years marked, and he's looking to collect as much info and photos as possible. If anyone has anything they can offer Brian please send it to me at dave_daasnz@hotmail.com and I can pass it onto him.

Might be useful to have this listing of pilots known to have flown for NZAT:
Maurice William (Buck) Buckley (B Licence No.3, issued c. Sep-Nov 21?) Philip Kenning (Shorty) Fowler (B 10, 20 Dec 21) Stanley Victor (Snowy) Mallard (B 12, Dec 1921) James Cuthbert (Bert) Mercer (B 8, 14 Nov 21) William Frederick (Bill) Parke (B 9, 16 Nov 21) Norman Charles Wiseman (B 11, 27 Dec 21)
And some of the ground staff: William James Harrington Hugh John Mayo Mr Page Percival Victor Sharp
It would be interesting to learn if Rodolph kept a diary at the time and if so does it survive? Also, if company ledgers should still survive they would give a lead to who was employed and when by the company.

I have been working for some years through the Timaru museum, Christchurch museum, and Wigram to get as much info as possible on the early (1919-1924) civil aviation scene. Christchurch museum seems to be the most fertile source.
I wonder how Henri at the start of this thread) got on? Anyone here from the South Canterbury mob?

From the stats it looks like he joined, asked the question, and never logged on again

Greetings All
My name is Rory Butler and I am the eldest grandchild of Hugh John Mayo who was a ground staff member at the Levels airfield near Washdyke in days gone well by. I see that you are seeking information concerning the activities of these men and, while I do have quite a lot of information concerning my grandfather (e.g. He was the first to ride a motorcycle from Timaru to Mt Cook and return in a single day, as likewise to Dunedin and return.) I do not have much concerning his activities at the airfield. I do have a short audio clip of him describing his activities there which was recorded for the radio not long before he died back in December 1971. I'd be very pleased to receive any further information as I am currently writing a family history, in which he played a major part.
