Pilot dead following 'catastrophic failure' of hang glider at Kariotahi Beach

Police observe the hang glider crash at Kariotahi Beach which left one dead.
The pilot of a hang glider has died after the aircraft crashed at Kariotahi Beach, south west of Auckland, on Thursday afternoon.
Emergency services were called to the scene, about an hour from central Auckland, around 4pm.
Police on the scene said it appeared the hang glider suffered a "catastrophic failure" which caused the glider to fall to the ground and the man died on impact
A police helicopter was also in attendance at the crash.
"The hang glider hit the ground with a very big bang and then it was a case of running and calling the rescue services," a witness on the scene said.
An investigation is underway into the circumstances of the crash.
Police are currently in the process of informing next of kin
