Is anyone aware of a DH84 Dragon used for topdressing in Australia? One at an airshow in a 1950's film that has been posted to Facebook seems to be dropping fertiliser. It can be seen here along with lots of Austers, Chippies, Sea Furies and Fireflies and other good British types www.facebook.com/groups/ADFSerials/permalink/1392089534225896/

Thanks Ray. What sort of weight did a Tiger Moth carry, to compare?

Thanks Ray. What sort of weight did a Tiger Moth carry, to compare? 3-5cwt, or quarter of a ton max.

Tiger Moth carried 3 by 180lb bags in 1950 my job was to open the bags, and fold the empty owns. And the most important job was to boil the billy..

There was a plan to use them here, but Civil Aviation said no,as there were issues with superphosphate and the wooden construction.

What was the issue, since Tiger Moths were also wooden? Was it the weight?

I think the issue was the superphoshate attacks the glue joints in the wood. They had a problem with the wooden construction of the Noorduyn Norseman which was used on topdressing in Australia. The superphosphate also ate away the Tiger Moth and Piper Cub metal fuselages, that was one reason the Auster Agricola never found favour was its tube and canvas construction.

Do you not include the Pawnee in the later category? As for the Norsemans, Col just ran out of spare engines. I heard when he got the aircraft, there was 25 spare engines. When the engines started using too much oil, he just went to the big shed and got another one.
