Amodel are getting pretty good now with some real quality kits... This is their Devon in NZ Warbirds colours. The model is injection with some photoetch. I chose to ditch the kit's decal cheatline and create my own with more accurate colours for KTT the way she would have appeared in the '90s through early 2000's. The rest of the decals are from the kit devon2 by Harry Follas, on Flickr IMG_6425 by Harry Follas, on Flickr IMG_6434 by Harry Follas, on Flickr IMG_6431 by Harry Follas, on Flickr

Nice work Harry! I was pleased to see this kit come out but I think this may be the first completed one I've seen.

Does anyone do a 1/48 scale one?

Two lovely models you have got there Harry, the one in the 70’s early 80’s livery will look the part with my 1/72 RNZAF diecast collection as I have Harvard and a Bunty from that era. Now only if Oxford Diecast will do a Devon as they have a few Doves so far.

Don't know about 'KTT but the Air Force ones never had the boomerang aerial on the roof whilst in RNZAF service

Ahh-ha! Very observant! Yes, the original vee shape antenna snapped off and fell victim to the carpet monster, so I substituted with the horseshoe shaped antenna still in the kit. The new model (BZP) has the correct antenna (not used), so could easily be substituted 😉

on the airforce ones the antenna comes out of the canopy, I think BZP and KTT might run a little hot with out outlet for the oil coolers....

There were also two whip antennas coming out of the canopy and as NZ1828 was a signals devon, an HF aerial from the fin (where the current one is attached) to the starboard mainplane wingtip

Add to my comment above for NZ1828 and most other Devons the three Rebecca antennaes on the top of each mainplane towards the wing tip, very prominent in photos of Devons and of varying lengths joined by a lateral support towards the top of each set

The two aerials from the back of the canopy, one was the VHF aerial, the short one and the other was for the ADF. Not to sure about the aerials on the sigs Devons as they had two HF sets , The one from the wingtip to the tail terminated above the cabin I think. Twas a long time ago.

Thanks for the feedback guys, from memory actually based the resin model nz1828 on its civil guise as XNZ from memory so possibly a few less antennas etc.
Interesting point re the oil cooler outlets Mit, a complete oversight by Amodel. Are they retractable/openable by chance? Might explain their omission. I was limited by the photo-etch provided by Amodel regarding antenna choice, again presumably KTT when civilianised has much aerials removed?

Another configuration of the HF antennae on the Devons was for two aerials; one from the canopy blister to the top of the fin, and the other from a standoff mount on the top of the fuselage starboard of the centre line just aft of the astrodome to a mid-point on the leading edge of the fin. (this configuration appears on NZ1812, NZ1817, NZ1821 circa 1960s, all of those being Comms Devons)

...On a similar subject, I have been refurbishing an old Airfix DH Heron during the lockdown too. I originally made this about 15 years ago & it was built fairly well out of the box with thin disguises to make it a Series 1. The old poly filler had shrunk and it was looking a bit sad so I decided to remove all the rivet detail, rejig the props, re-profile the tail and re-do the fixed gear to make it a better representation of the Series 1 Heron...Still going to be in NZNAC markings but with a white top. Progress on the Heron Looking a bit better without all the rivets and obvious poorly fitting seams The windows are still the poorly fitting and over thick Airfix originals...If I was to do this kit from scratch I'd try and swap these out for thinner plastic.
