Both Harvards and Sioux used smoke grenades/flares to mark targets and as you say launched (very carefully) by the pilot or observer! |

Not sure about the Sioux but in my time riding around in the back seat of the FAC Harvards as a flying spanner we dropped 12lb smoke bombs.
