Just looking at the specs for the OPVs and was wondering what that substantial crane on stern was for. Have never seen it being used or at least no photos. If it’s for hoisting the ‘up to 3’ standard containers the OPV can transport then has this ever been needed! The two containers in front of the crane look like permanent fixtures with an inflatable boat stored on top of each one. Also looks like a rear window in container, what are these permanent containers used for? If it wasn’t for this crane and containers a longer flight deck would be interesting for UAVs, maybe two helps. HMNZS Wellington deploying the Sentry autonomous vehicle with it's crane. Thanks for that photo. Although it showed a crane in use I’d imagine deploying the Woods Hole Sentry is not a common occurrence or task for our OPVs. I should probably have asked what the cranes are most often used for and is it to do with sea container movements or RHIB or other boat deployment. Or perhaps sub surface recovery tasks, sunken stuff that needs surfacing etc. mine, buoy taking away..
