The Auckland Domains Field of Crosses

Set in front of the AWMM and Cenotaph is afield of crosses, one for each lost in WW1, over 18,000. Many visitors were there, it was very quiet.

I was doing the same thing, only at Cranmer Square in Christchurch - 4398 Canterbury losses . The atmosphere was the same...beatifully warm Spring day. bitter-sweet. Sobering.

That have something similar in all the major centres...  When seeing the numbers visually kinda brings a lump to the throat and is very powerful...
