Apologies if this is not the right board for this one (just couldn't find a Civil NZ model board). Have just completed a 1:48 scratchbuild of the Bennett (Waitomo) PL.11 Airtruck - designed by Luigi Pellarini. Phew! DSC00981 by ian w, on Flickr And here's the complete line up - PL.7 Air Tanker (1956), PL.11 Airtruck (1960) and PL.12 Airtruk (1965) - all in 1:48. all scratchbuilt DSC00986 by ian w, on Flickr

Bloody marvellous ! PL12 Airtruk........constant speed variable noise (but generally loud). One based at Temora. The early Sunday morning flights arouse the ire of the local air park residents a bit especially after some of the famous Temora airfield party nights.

The main modelling board (this one I have moved the thread to) covers all NZ aviation topics, not just RNZAF.
Those three are great! I had no idea that the PL.11 was so much bigger than the PL.12!!

Perhaps the only existing set of this trio of rascals in any scale? Very impressive too. Incidentally the PL-7 was powered by an AS Cheetah, presume ex Anson or Oxford. Dave D

Ian,
Thats is seriously good scratch building. This is where the value of scale models comes to the fore as I also was surprised at the size difference between PL11 and PL12. Only possible when able to compare scale models or of cause the real thing.

The fuse pod has been vacformed, wings are laminated etc etc. The wingspan is a 305mm - they are not that big as far as models go. There will be a 'build' article in the Australian Plastic Modellers Association (APMA) quarterly magazine a little later this year...

Only possible when able to compare scale models or of cause the real thing. Yes the PL.12 is positively petite by comparison. PL.11 was a bit of a brute with that Harvard radial stuck out the front. PL.11: Wingspan 48ft, payload 3700lb, 550hp P&W radial PL.12: Wingspan 39ft, payload 1709lb, 300hp Conti flat 6

Very nice builds . Especially as they are scratch built. I saw my first real full size one of these on my recent visit to New Zealand a month ago at MOTAT Auckland. Difference being the engine fitted to the one on display but one of the strangest looking aircraft I have seen even though I know of their existence.

Hi guys, I have been amazed by the photos of the PL11. I knew Snow Bennett personally when he worked with me at Transavia on the PL12. Snow and Luigi Pellarini I met in 1964 when I started my apprenticeship with Transavia as an Aircraft Maintenance Engineer. The factory was just starting up at the time so I was there from the beginning helping to make the jigs and tooling. I learnt a lot from Snow and Luigi. I still have some pictures around of the PL12 on the day the first one (VH-TRN) rolled off the line including one of the first test flight.
