Where does this increase in 'infantry' numbers come from. Thats not what the Capability Plan says. In fact infantry is not mentioned once in the published plan.

Stuff wrote it, I quoted from them. So is the reality the Government plans to 'increase' the Army size from 6,492 to 6,000?

Yes (using new maths). Obviously its 6000 regulars not the current total workforce.

It's quite possible my tired eyes have read this wrong but did it also mention the possibility of getting heavier armour than the LAVs?

I would assume that the army is intending to raise another infantry battalion, they have always been keen on having three regular force infantry battalions as it enables them to rotate each battalion through training on an annual basis having one ready for any deployment, one in training and one in rest. The additional numbers would I assume make up the support units required for this. With regard to armour I guess we would follow Australia in its commitment to replace their LAVs with the new German Boxer APC.

I guess all the extra soldiers will have their pick of automatic weapons from Jacinda's confiscated stockpile.

No, 'cause she's only confiscating 'Semi automatic' rifles...and lever action and pump action. No full auto, they aren't even included in the potential buyback..

The increase in infantry size has been misinterpreted. It actually refers to the increasing size of people, so what they really mean is they will be recruiting larger soldiers.

It'll be interesting to see how this increase in manning is going to be distrubuted. Given that the NZ interpretation of a battalion is somewhere in the vicinty of 500 people does this mean we are getting an extra RF battalion or 2? Given that we only have 2 RF battalions at present this would be a significant increase. Or are other arms going to see a significant uplift in personnel?
