The government's management of Defence property for the past 30 years seems to be best described as a bugger's muddle.

If the government is incapable of making billions from a huge chunk of mainly green field land a relatively short distance from the CBD then something is seriously wrong with the governance of our country. Regardless, Whenuapai's days are likely numbered I fear. Once 5 goes it becomes a rather large expensive facility for a relatively small number of aircraft.. The fact that a lot of the infrastructure is pretty tired and will need replacing will not have escaped the beancounters attention. There will be a number of people in Wellington thinking of doing a Hobsonville mk2 and rebuilding Whenuapai's facilities elsewhere. Expect it to be gone by 2040.

Nobody would ever make "billions" by developing a piece of land that size, least of all the government.

The Greens want to get rid of dairy, so buy up a few dairy farms around Canterbury, that will make them a little happier, then a nice big base somewhere about halfway between the coast and the mountains (I'm about there, and I don't mind at all). isc

C-17s can get in and out of the airport there, but the runway would have to be extended and significant infrastructure built. Not as expensive acquiring the land as it would be nearer Christchurch or around Burnham. Dairy farms aren't exactly cheap and housing in Christchurch, Rolleston, Kaiapoi, and Rangiora is quite expensive. So a regional location would be better.

Sounds very similar to RAAF Richmond North West of Sydney. Defence not really sure of its future so the base facilities are generally quite tired and nothing like the investment in other bases. A new tower really the only exception. Seems at the moment it’s staying. Notable was F35s using the base for diversion training from Williamtown last week. Seems for NZ Ohakea will be the focus of most investment with the P8s going there and assume it’s pretty safe from urban sprawl.
