I think that they stuffed up not getting two of the C-17 white tails back in 2014 / 15; too scared to spend political capital on defence, and too stingy to invest money in the capability. For example, we could've taken over a fair bit of the heavy lifting for Deep Freeze and been paid by the US for it. We would've found plenty of work for the aircraft - you just have to look at other air forces who fly them and how much utilisation they get. But that door has well and truly closed now. Agree. I know we would never do it, especially with who's currently in charge here, but would a couple of second hand ones from the Americans be an option? I agree with your comments on like-for-like as well. yeah because they've done nothing for the RNZAF in the way of major acquisitions in their term so far..... Unlike the last lot.

I have no party allegiance, but the previous lot did line the P-8 up; the current lot just confirmed it. Given the situation with the Hercs and Orions their hand was pretty much forced, and that would've likely been true no matter who was in charge. What I actually meant was: no matter who was in charge, I can't imagine any of them being proactive enough to approach the U.S. asking for a couple of second hand C-17s and trying to strike a deal that might work in the Antarctica element as mentioned previously by someone else.

They have a $7.5 billion surplus. Enough to buy some new planes for the RNZAF. Yea a tui moment. Who's a comedian?

I noticed various times the option of secondhand C-17's from US. But there are no surplus C-17's right now. Despite a recent deactivation of a Air Force Reserve unit with C-17's they have been distributed to other squadrons.
No chance to see any C-17 soon available for RNZAF.
