The Poppy Flight – we need your help with flights & knitting! This is a major fundraiser bringing together remembrance and hope for the future. With school and community involvement, will encourage our children to remember those who fought for our freedom, many of whom who paid the ultimate price, and encourage them to think about returned servicemen who need our help and support now. It will also encourage them to think about and support, children and their families who are dealing with illness and challenges we can only imagine. Our collective fundraising will help the RSA and Starship Foundation continue to provide the care needed in many areas. The Poppy Flight will also help keep our aviation history alive through the NZ Warbirds Association, without whom the flight would not be possible. At the moment we are building up a team of volunteers, initially pilots and aircraft that will fly a knitted poppy and star around the country in the run up to ANZAC Day. How can you help? For each flight sector we will need 1. Scheduled flight team One 2. Accompanying flight team Two 3. Back up drivers in case of bad weather There are plenty of other ways you can help. Can anyone knit or crochet? If not please ask around. We will be needing thousands of poppies and stars to sell at Wanaka Airshow. Also we will need heaps of people to help with the activities at each destination where there will be a welcome party. You can see all the details on the website www.poppyflight.co.nzThanks for your support Mel

This is a great initiative Mel, and a great cause.
I spoke to my Mum this morning, she is an avid knitter and crocheter for charity, mainly making blankets for Operation Cover Up (which sends woollen blankets to orphanages in Europe) and she said she's be happy to knit or crochet some poppies for Poppy Flight if you can please provide a pattern.
I am sure that many members here will get behind this and help out with the flying and ground activities.

Hiya There are two patterns on the website "help" page www.poppyflight.co.nz/HelpI am hoping to have as many as possible ready to sell at Tauranga airshow on 18th January so any ready for this date would be very welcome. Flights are going well and around half are organized thanks to all of you. We would like a few aircraft doing each sector so if you see one already booked do still get in touch as you can be part of the team and we have both the poppy and star to carry. Cheers Mel

Posted today on Poppy Flight's Facebook page: Poppy Flight departure is tomorrow at 9.30am from Ardmore with Dave Brown flying the Harvard to Thames on the first leg of this 4 week relay. We have a slot on The AM Show at 6.50am and Seven Sharp are filming the first few days for a story which will go out next week, look out for those. Fingers crossed for good weather, hope all goes well and thanks to all involved. To show your appreciation for this huge team of volunteers and the charities they are supporting, the RSA, The Starship Foundation and NZ Warbirds, please visit www.poppyflight.co.nz/donate
