... The thing is they have cases every day, many more than we have, both before and after the lockdown, both imported cases and community cases. The difference is they are handling it within their existing systems. This is the opposite of our government, who seem either very risk averse or have zero confidence in the systems they have set up and the ability of those systems to handle COVID cases, especially community cases. Their only response to new cases is yo-yo-ing in and out of lockdowns, with the regular economic shocks every time. Completely sympathise with the feelings out there as a consequence of the rescheduling of this event, let's hope that the decision pays off handsomely for the organizers and the public supporting the event. This isn't true, there have been community cases with no associated lockdown (or even change in Level, which is what is relevant for event planning). Confidence in systems is clearly lower than say NSW, but higher than e.g. Victoria.

Yesterday, on hearing the news, I contacted our Blenheim motel to cancel our Easter booking. We also had a discussion on how this cancellation will affect the wider Blenheim accommodation and hospitality businesses. Many of them were relying on this Easter event to top up their cash reserves and tide them over the winter. This, of course, will not now happen, and for some such businesses may well be the final straw.
My sympathy goes out to them.

I imagine that many business are only running because their financiers don't see any point in foreclosing in the current environment - they may as well keep them on the books while interest rates are low rather than try to sell a motel or whatever hospo-related assets they have rights to.

I'd take issue with with all of that - you might notice there are 4 levels of Covid and when were we last at level 4? I and almost everyone I know are delighted by the governments response - I consider it very measured. I don't want it in the community and then 'managed' The show will be waiting for us in September. - makes prefect sense - apart from the weather maybe not as flashy?

Interesting as in the past local accommodation providers have always shrugged their shoulders when asked to assist the airshow and said that they would be full at Easter even if Classic Fighters was not held!

I am very pleased to learn of the postponement, I have made it to every show so far but this year due to up coming medical events I was going to have to miss it. Now with these new dates I will be able to keep with tradition and be there.

That would have perhaps been in pre-COVID times before the NZ Govt went with a 'one size fits all' lockdown approach to each and every community case recorded in this country. While there may be some travelers locally due to the Easter weekend, the boost from the CF event would have been sorely needed for many businesses one suspects.

Could Not disagree more wish this - Tripe! As said above the motels will likely be doing Ok in Easter and then will get filled in September when the Airshow is on...

I'd say the postponement of the Classic Fighters has a bit to do with Covid, but has a lot to do with preparation & numbers of advanced tickets purchased.
I'd rather have seen a scaled back 'Flyin' rather than a late winter Airshow.

Bugger.....as they say. But there's still an airshow happening just have to pray extra hard to those weather gods. Immediately i found out that my cheap accommodation wouldn't be happening (not your fault Don I went online and booked accommodation with Lumpy. Cheers mate, I'll bring my own T Sauce! Ok now I've given Lumpy a heart attack I booked into one of the flash hotels in Blenheim......bar even does wine tastings! Maybe those who do make it might be able to come for dinner one evening. Its the Scenic Hotel Marlborough which I stayed at just before the 2009 Airshow when I stayed to help Marty with painting part of the Bristol. I have a big project looming at work and this will make my bosses day knowing I'm not going at Easter. I've booked cancellable motel and locked in airfare prices for 3 days while I evaluate options (which include two different family members). BTW Return fares for the time in question have gone up about $100.

Yep that'd be typical Errol. Despite being off-peak winter, non-school holidays.... as opposed to prime peak travel time at Easter....

Yep that'd be typical Errol. Despite being off-peak winter, non-school holidays.... as opposed to prime peak travel time at Easter.... Demand increased over the two days, why wouldn't the price go up? The prices two days ago were about the same as when I booked Easter flights several months out.

I just looked at the cost of flying from Hamilton to Blenheim. I'd be looking at $500. Sod that, not sure I am so keen now.

You can fly to Nelson instead - plenty of people coming over the hill
or go to Wellington and then catch the ferry - which is $100 return for a foot passenger
or go on the DC-3!

AirNZ lets you rebook/get credits for flights ... that leave on or before March 31st. This has now been extended to 30 June, if anyone hasn't rebooked their flights yet. www.airnewzealand.co.nz/covid19And to add to the various bits of specific speculation in the media about the Trans-Tasman bubble, AirNZ has added WLG-SYD flights to their booking system from mid-April

Hearing some industry scuttlebutt around April 12th as the commencement of the much-awaited bubble. If this is the case it will great for those of us wishing to jump the ditch to attend CF2021 & for those Kiwi's who wish to celebrate the RAAF's 100th at Avalon in November But I'll hurry up & wait....
