This vacuform model has being taunting me since I acquired it mid last year (and after flying in Paspaley Pearl's G-73AT at Lake Maquarie in May). I nearly built the turbo-Mallard, however I thought it was better to build a radial engine original...the NZ example ZK-CDV which supported the Manapouri Project in the 1960s The model is not the easiest proposition because all you get are a series of basic outlines to work with However there are some exceptional drawings to work from for dimensions & placement etc. I have being hording spare parts for just the occasion. The seats are ex Twin Pioneer resin seats (left over from my Convair build), the control columns are pure Airfix beaver and the instruments are a decal borrowed from a Dove kit. R-1340s are resin Radial Engine & Wheels 72 and the propellers are cut down Airfix DC-3 interior by Harry Follas, on Flickr major components by Harry Follas, on Flickr assemblies complete by Harry Follas, on Flickr hull asymetry by Harry Follas, on Flickr Progress is slow, there was only one issue to rectify so far...asymmetry of the chines on the hull...this required building up the stbd side of the hull and re contouring... rigging props by Harry Follas, on Flickr The Props, temporarily rigged. Building these vacuform kits are a bit like carving models from solid wood! You keep whittling them down, filling them and whittling them down some more...can be quite relaxing (surprisingly), although a Dremel Tool is certainly a lifesaver! The next item on the agenda will be the wingtip floats and then the landing gear (which appears more daunting!)

major components complete...undercarriage temporarily fitted. You can now see the exposed spar in the wing The model is very strong...I dropped it accidentally on a tile floor when assembled with gear in it and not a scratch or dent Untitled by Harry Follas, on Flickr Untitled by Harry Follas, on Flickr

Beautiful progress Harry! I only learned of ZK-CDV last year so I'm excited to see it in model form.

Interesting useless bit of info, when J-13 was initially purchased from Grumman it was as Lord Beaverbrook's personal executive aircraft, registered CF-FFG in January 1947

Gradual improvements... * Sparay rails along the chine line of the hull *Replaced windshields to get narrower center-post *Landing Gear detailing...also replacement main wheels from Mach2 Convair 440 (the hubs were carefully removed from the original vac-form wheels) * Exhaust details Untitled by Harry Follas, on Flickr Untitled by Harry Follas, on Flickr Untitled by Harry Follas, on Flickr

Basic paint scheme is now complete...I modified the rear step and built up the cockpit roof to make it more bulbous...I added a scoop to the righthand aft of baggage compartment...it appears to be a heater?? or perhaps an APU of some sort added during Kiwi service (not as VH-TGA) Untitled by Harry Follas, on Flickr Untitled by Harry Follas, on Flickr Untitled by Harry Follas, on Flickr Untitled by Harry Follas, on Flickr

The Mallard is now pretty much complete, This is ZK-CDV wearing basic TAA Markings of the 1960s period (as she did while on the Manapouri Project). The model seems to have come up quite well... The Albatross was used by Operation Deep Freeze in the mid 1950s, they blasted off from Taieri, using JATO, along with the R 4Ds, the Daks., made it south, the Albatross turned back.

I'll always remember the day the Mallard came up to our hangar at Rex Aviation for fuel, nd while it sat next to the pumps, it slowley sank into the ground until it bottomed out on its keel. We needed to borrow NACs tug to haul it out of the hole it was in. The heaviest aircraft before that was a C 185, the taxiway and standing area were only a few weeks old, and still quite soft. isc

Rich Sudgen's Albatross visited Ardmore and had a 100 hourly in the late nineties not long after the Proctor's visit.
