Leaving work today, spotted at a guess around 25 light aircraft sitting at the Cromwell airfield, which don't normally. Another calm, clear day in Central, so i hope the arrivals had a good flight in from wherever they came from. Google tells me it's most likely the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association 50th Anniversary AGM. Do we have any members/attendees on the forum that can explain more about what they are up to, where they are from etc?

Was up at Lowburn (Cromwell, not Loburn Canterbury) the other day. The old Crom airfield (NZCW) is up here, as used by Mt Cook Airline back in the day. -44.98206254539919, 169.21624191959643 This is looking across the airfield. Note this pic is a 180° panorama, the fence to left & right is the same fence, and is in a straight line, not on a corner! The building to the right is this: This is the old terminal building. A lonely windsock remains hanging in the distance. I haven't seen any action here for some time, and a pivot irrigator appears to arc over what was part of the strip. I don't imagine DC3's would fit in what remains, perhaps someone with an older collection of AIP's can suggest if the strip was longer?

DC3 ZK-JGB has moved into the rear of the Toy & Transport Museum's yard amongst the old trucks and other rusty relics. Does this signify its flying days are done?

The "Terminal" at Lowburn/Cromwell (above) reminds me of that at Alexandra in the early 1960s, which catered for SPANZ at the time. Apart from the terminal, only other building in sight was a reasonably large open-ended arch hangar with what I believe was a Cessna 150 inside. It was interesting that the Alexandra field was located on a plateau all of its own. Cannot recall if the Alexandra terminal was of concrete block or wooden construction, but it was mighty small.
