The plan view of the Knox St Drill Hall in 1926 in Dave's report reference shows a skylight arrangement identical to the skylights shown in the P-40 photograph (alternately offset from ridge to eaves) and would suggest it is a strong favourite.

Shorty said: Except Shorty, Rukuhia did not have hangars like Ardmore. In fact I do not believe anywhere had hangars of the design that Ardmore had. The Ardmore hangars are rounded and do not have trusses. Here is an interior shot of the Pioneer hangar off the web. The building in the photo has a straight roof and low hanging trusses and girders. Rukuhia only had two of the large hangars, as seen in Marty's photos on the previous page. One of them was moved in from Whenuapai in 1942, and at the end of the war it moved it moved back and still stands at Whenuapai.

Found this report in Waikato Times 22 September 1944, which would tend to indicate that the Kittyhawk was in a hangar at Rukuhia, along with the other aircraft mentioned. First time I was aware of an Avenger parked in Victoria Street. BOMBER ON VIEW Along the bomber in Victoria Street was displayed a portable engine test bench fitted with a twinrow Pratt and Whitney motor. I seem to recall seeing a photo of an Avenger with the her wings folded on display somewhere in wartime NZ. Can't recall where it was now but this reminded me of it.

looking at the photos of the display, I'm more inclined now to say it was the Drill Hall. The hangars at Rukuhia ahve side wall windows and appear to be of a higher stud than the Drill Hall. As regards the markings, I would agree that some poetic licence was on display there. As Dave said, quite truthful of the fact that the aircraft had fought in the pacific, but if the sharks mouth is anything to go by, the rest is almost spurious, with regard to the apparent condition of the paintwork and no pacific stripes..

Also during the same Air Force Week: New Zealand Herald, 21 September 1944 BOMBER ON DISPLAY (O.C.) ROTORUA, Wednesday The arrival of an Avenger torpedo-bomber from Gisborne today in connection with Air Force Week for the Victory Loan created much interest in Rotorua. The bomber, which has seen service in the South-west Pacific, was towed from the airfield to the Town Hall grounds, where it will remain on view for several days.

An insight into some of the various RNZAF facilities around town Hamilton.
Waikato Times, 16 September 1944.
AIR FORCE WEEK PROGRAMME OF EVENTS Air Force week in connection with the Victory Loan commences on Monday. On one day during the week a number of aircraft will fly in formation over the town, arriving in Hamilton at approximately 1 p.m. On Friday a number of privileges will be extended to the public. First, between certain hours (see separate advertisement) visitors will be permitted to enter Bledisloe Hall and see the large number of personnel repairing aircraft engines. While in the building they will also be given the privilege of viewing the radiator repair and propeller repair sections. A mobile test unit will be seen in Garden Place, where the Air Force Pipe Band will render selections during the luncheon hour.
Window Displays
Five interesting window displays have been arranged and these will be on view from Monday. All these displays represent sections with their headquarters in Hamilton. In Messrs H. And J. Courts window will be found a display of aircraft instruments by the instrument repair section (occupying the premises of Armstrong Motors, Ltd.), a display of wireless apparatus by the signal repair section (in Foreman Motors Building) will be on view in the windows of Messrs Barton and Ross Ltd, while a display of modern armament equipment by the armament repair section in the Winter Show building, will be seen in Messrs Hooker and Kingston’s windows. In Messrs Woolworths’ windows will be a display of precision engineering work by the general engineering section (located in Ebbetts Motors building) and a display of propellers and their allied equipment will be made by the propeller repair section (in Waikato Winter Show building) in the windows of Messrs Vickery Ltd.

A special announcement. The Air Force Museum of New Zealand's fantastic FotoWeb page has a lot of photos where the people in them remain unknown. I had been thinking recently that it might be good to start adding them here to see if anyone recognised them. Then WONZ members aircraftclocks made the same suggestion too. So I consulted with the Keeper of Photographs Matthew O'Sullivan. He was keen but had to consult the team. He has just sent through the following message here: So here is the first batch. Do you recognise any of these people? If so please quote the photo and/or at least the reference number in your reply. The Winter Show Building and Bledisloe Hall were one and the same. Shorty and I agree that the building the P-40N with shark's teeth is, is not Bledisloe Hall/the Winter Show building. Although it was the largest, Bledisloe Hall (built 1935) was not the only building on the Waikato Winter Show site in 1944. Bledisloe Hall was constructed behind the original Winter Show building (built in 1907 as the Horse Bazaar) which was the main entrance and occupied the Ward St frontage. I think this is where the propeller repair section and the armament repair section may have been located. The old building had a distinctive cladding of corrugated iron laid horizontal which was visible from the interior. So this doesn’t appear to be a location of any of these wartime display photos. In 1966 when the Winter Show Association vacated this site and moved to the Claudelands Showgrounds, the old building was demolished and the Bledisloe Hall was re-located to Mystery Creek. That left just the William Paul Hall which had been added in 1957. It was soon after occupied by the Hamilton Public Library.
