Thanks Dave, that is very cool. I've seen that photo before but obviously haven't looked that hard.

This photo, TENG232, is dated December 1956, so I wonder if it is known when the squadron changed from the red and white checked rudders on their Venoms to the black with the white Kiwi. I also wonder if the Vampires wore the checks prior to this. Given the date of the photo, that would make this Vampire either XE957 or XH358

I also wonder if the Vampires wore the checks prior to this. The Red/White checkerboard rudders on the Venoms changed to black rudders with white Kiwi's in October/November 1956. The Kiwi's were added to the bone domes at the same time. I'm not sure if the Vampires had checkerboard rudders.

That explains why the black paint looks so fresh on the tail in the McCabe and Tucker photo from December 1956.

I nicked a photo from online - credit to Ian Piper, sorry. And I did a quick bit of shopping to see what the Vampires looked like. I wonder if Mr Emeny might consider a wee repaint as the scheme looks fantastic!

Awesome pic of the T.11 Dave. Nice to see another Kiwi survivor. Note the rough hand-painted 'E' on WE449

I think that a No. 14 Squadron RNZAF Vampire T.11 in the black tail scheme flying with a couple of 14 SQN Venoms over Singapore's coast together would make a terrific theme for an aviation artwork.

An air to air photo would be even better Dave. Wishful thinking on my part. IMG_2326 by Jason Mills, on Flickr What appears to be two T11's with Kiwi tails on the 14 Squadron flight line. Agreed, it would be great if Matthew has any other photos of these T.11's in the AFMNZ archive, and especially some air to airs. Fingers crossed.

Great idea ZAC, the only correction is that the Kiwi Venoms and Vampires at Singapore did not carry the silver fern in the middle of the roundel as they were "loaned RAF aircraft"

Until a clear photo shows up of one, we won’t know for sure. Or did you serve in Singapore and know first hand? There must be some clear photos out there of that scheme somewhere.

Wow, this looks rather dynamic for a Freighter! I never realised they were that nimble! WgG2462-52 LINKGround to air view of No. 41 Squadron Bristol Freighter NZ5909 flying low over RNZAF Station Wigram during an Open Day flying display. 08/03/1952

Lots of "UP" on the elevator as he yanks her round! Impressive photo alright! Probably an opticalillusion but it almost looks like the starboard engine is stopped with the prop feathered! EDIT: you know the shadow certainly looks like its in feather, especially when compared with the port prop!

Would question the carrying of the silver fern on the Vampires for two reasons. 1. They were loaned aircraft from the RAF and it would be against international rules of identification of military aircraft to carry markings not related to the ownership ( i.e RAF) For this reason none of the loaned aircraft in Cyprus or Singapore carried unique NZ national markings (roundels) 2. The Silver fern was introduced in late 1958 by which time the Vampires on loan were being returned to the RAF as the Canberras of 75 Squadron were coming on line during that period.

Despite its appearance, the Freighter can be thrown around a bit. To wit, Peter Adamson, following test flight of '03 prior to last flight to the Air Force Museum, gave one of the most amazing handling displays of a Freighter I have ever seen.

The Freighter is in the original (bare-metal) finish, and is of course equipped with bomb racks (although they are not normally used as bombers!), and I would agree that it looks very much as though it has a feathered prop. Underwing serial numbers seem to be rather squeezed together, but presume these were applied at the factory according to style requested by RNZAF, although that was likely standard RAF pattern anyway - or was it?
