Hello - hope this is the right location for this question.
I was told today that sometime during WWII an Aeroplane crashed into the back (seaward) side of Kapiti Island, North of Wellington.
It was thought to be an American transport aircraft with 2 engines - was supposed to have departed Nelson heading I think for Paraparaumu airport.
Does anyone here have any details about this? A DOC worker recovered some engine parts from the site several years afterwards from the rocks at the base of the cliffs.
Regards

DC-3 ZK-AOE at Rununder Point, Port Underwood on it's way to NZPP? No, not in war-time. ZK-AOE was an NAC DC-3 freighter flying from Woodbourne (Blenheim) to Paraparaumu on 9 August 1948. The Harvard on Kapiti Island is NZ1008

Indeed, AOE did crash just after the war. I was throwing it out there as an option because obviously somewhere, someone has got their facts mixed up - a Harvard is not a twin-engined aeroplane. The DC-3 is, and the proposed circumstances are similar.

Thank you for help with this, is most likely the Harvard, I had heard about it from the son of a DOC worker and information I had was third hand at least!

The air accident that you refer to was Harvard NZ 1008 which crashed on 5 November 1943. It was a ferry flight from Fairhall (Woodbourne) to Ohakea and resulted in the deaths of PLTOFF Harold Longley and F/S Ivan Cummins. The plan was for Longley to then fly a P40 Kittyhawk from Ohakea back to Woodbourne.
