Great for the Nimbys. Not too much there and central to other destinations.

But the Nimbys that are there already WILL oppose it vehemently! In all of New Zealand's provinces this would have to be the most difficult to develop/build anything under the RMA. Considering the site is only 30 minutes from Wanaka, I'm of the opinion that developing Wanaka would be more tolerable and efficient use of funds. Of course, Christchurch International Airport doesn't own it - Queenstown does (most of it)

True. It doesn't really make sense to have three regional airports in spitting distance, especially given Tarras is so close to Wanaka. It is still a hike to Queenstown, not really convenient.

Can't say this pleases me, I live about 5km from this location and will see and hear it all day. Can't fathom the logic with Wanaka just up the road, I can see this in court being argued over with QAC/AIAL/QLDC vs CIAL/CODC while property prices and lifestyles fall. The bickering thats going on locally around upgrading Wanaka Airport will pale in comparison. Hard to believe that there would be enough flights to justify, but we'll just have several under utilised aiports instead. Personally, I felt sorting a mass transit system from Invers to Te Anau & Queenstown (e.g. reinstate the rail network), would work but airport companies wouldn't be into other forms of transport would they?

Surely COVID 19 would have been a pretty major setback to their plans with the bottom falling out of the international travel market. I'm sure whoever is financing the deal must be getting a bit jumpy.

Could this simply be a strategic move by Christchurch International Airport Company to attempt to dissuade Queenstown Airport Corporation's (who are owned by Auckland International Airport Ltd) plans to develop Wanaka into a bigger airport so Chch does not lose the traffic?

As a Christchurch City ratepayer (The City Council own CIAC) I am astounded at this announcement and land purchase. At a time when the council is in serious financial strife due to the Earthquakes and now COVID-19, it astounds me that the CIAC wants to spend such a large amount of money on such a rediculous project that has no benefit for Christchurch. The $45M that has been used to buy the land could have been better spent back in Christchurch... I have no doubt that we will end up paying for this stupid project through out rates.

I have no doubt that we will end up paying for this stupid project through out rates. Following the precedent set by Hamilton, Rotorua and Palmy no doubt.
