I'm building another '72nd Vac-formed 180 from one of Lars' 180/185 kits... This one is going to be a 'working girl' and an early model '180. I've made a good start, however its still a quite generic 180 mainly based on the photos published here as it happens. My choice of liveries are a little bit limited due to the lack of coloured pix around of these aircraft. I'm looking for some hopper details, particularly the splitter arrangement beneath the cabin...does anybody here have any decent pictures of one by any chance? There seem to be at least 2-3 different variations that were mounted on the C180s, I've gone for the more slender 'box-shaped' variety. The other factor concerns the opening on top of the wing where the hopper was filled...did it typically have a spring loaded trap door that closed after it was filled? Currently I have just the open void modeled. Here is progress so far...I have used a spare Airfix Bird Dog wing I had floating around to speed construction IMG_1389 by Harry Follas, on Flickr IMG_1380 by Harry Follas, on Flickr IMG_1382 by Harry Follas, on Flickr production line...t'was built alongside a 185 for a commission . Makes an interesting contrast...both from same kit... Cessnas by Harry Follas, on Flickr

I reckon the hopper box should be far more forward - hopper box looks to far aft ?

I Positioned the external part (best I could) off photos...that shouldn't be too bad...I admit cabin box is too far aft, however the fuselage was sealed before I could fix that

I recall as a small kid looking (about 1960/61) at C.180 BWK, which was based at Amberley at the time (pilot Ken Eden), and could hardly believe that the hopper seemed to occupy practically the whole cabin. A slight exaggeration, but there did not seem to be much room for the pilot or passenger in front seats. All to do with the centre of gravity I guess. David D

Have looked thru some of my Ag C180 images and find the position of the hopper outlets vary. On some aircraft the rear of the hopper box is in line with the rear of the door opening while on others it is perhaps 30cm forward of that point.

It looks like a 185 hopper has been modelled into the cabin but the 180 in NZ had a smaller metal hopper. The outlet was on the right hand side of the fuselage as can be seen on photos of ZK-BDD, ZK-BDE, ZK-BFU etc in the files. The hopper box just had one central pivoted flap. In later times (into the late 60's and early 70's, Easton boxes were fitted. Side on the rear of the hopper was vertical and only obstructed part of the window and there was enough room for two passengers to squeeze in. There was no seat. Also our early 180's were installed with a baggage door which was standard on later models. The Cessna 185 had a central outlet to the hopper but with a large pipe though the centre line for the control lines.

Thanks for that...looks like some surgery may be required...I didn't spot that outlet was on the right side, looking at photos its easy to assume that it was on the centreline! Unfortunately I can't change the hopper box in the cabin, however I may move the loading port forward...is a bit of a pain as I have the finishing paint coat on
