No idea what this forum thing is as I have stumbled across it on accident. I’m wondering whether anyone knows any details on what happens at the officer selection board as I have applied for both pilot and helicopter loadmaster and am now awaiting selection (next week). If anyone has any information that is fairly recent (nothing from the 70s as I’ve seen on another thread as I doubt it’s the same) about what happens there, what to expect and what the week consists about it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance

One piece of advice I have heard is buy some Time magazines or similar and read up, so that you can throw some topical world events into discussion.

I have merged two very recent threads on the same topic together. Maybe you two will meet up on the OASB.

With the exception of the medical staff most of the selection board are seconded in for the process. The President of the board may be a Squadron Leader or Wing Commander that has previously had a number of operational appointments. Similarly the others on the board will be Education Officers along with Psychologist and other branches brought in for the process. They have to answer to their peers when the selected candidates are drinking in the mess, or working alongside them, just a year or two later. When I think of the RNZAF officers in general, it is difficult to think of a common denominator. If there was something it would be a keenness and ability to fit in. I don't recall any warmongers or any preachers, everyone was just part of the group. I would think the idea would be to make yourself known, make an impression but to be mainstream with it. I know one question was 'why do you want to be in the military'. You could tell the Psych that you wanted to kill people, that you wanted to win a VC, drink cheap beer, that you wanted to serve your country or anything else that comes to mind. There may not be any right or wrong answers. I think just be yourself and show a desire to be in 'the mob'. There will be 10 or 20 that may be selected and they will all be studying, working, or socialising alongside each other for years later. Become buddies with them during the selection and forget the guys that will not make it.

I know one question was 'why do you want to be in the military'. You could tell the physc that you wanted to kill people, I really wouldn't recommend that one.

They will make you the catering officer As others said be yourself. The way you act and the results of the phyc tests need to support each other.

Oh, yeah. I was forgetting the military has gone pc since my day. What one of the females told them probably wouldn't cut it these days either. She said it was because of al the men and how easy it would be to score. That was acceptable back then and she was accepted.
My answer was that civilians didn't qualify for the award of the VC, and left it at that. Perhaps I should have been more forceful as I never did get one. It was mentioned at my graduation and they gave me a presentation. A fairy tale book and some mention of reverse psychology, apparently I had trouble staying awake during lectures.
