Long ago I interviewed a former Mustang pilot from No.3 Sqn RAAF who flew from Fano. He received a brand spanking new P-51D and there was a name in pencil and contact details written inside the cockpit. He thought it was from manufacturing the machine and sent off a letter. To quote Banjo Patterson, "...a writing came directed, in a writing unexpected...". It was the ferry pilot of the aircraft who delivered the machine from North American to where it was disassembled, crated and shipped..... to our steely eyed pilots chagrin he found that "she" had far more hours on Mustangs than he !

Interesting looking at what went into what is really a radiator housing, correct me if wrong, very clever how they made it create thrust as well as serve a purpose, these updates are fantastic, thanks Zac, Brendon and all others involved

In my opinion, this is the most pictorially informative P51 restoration thread I have ever come across worldwide, and I have been searching for 35+ years and come across many sources. In conjunction with the original documentation available through AirCorp this is a simply fantastic reference and resource. I just want to share my continued appreciation for your efforts, noting the quality of the pictures and thoughtfulness in capturing images of items and details that most people would never consider showing. I think your work will assist and inspire others for a long time to come.

A special day today (FB link):NZ2423 Mapua 140820 Brendon Deere 03 by Zac Yates, on Flickr In my opinion, this is the most pictorially informative P51 restoration thread I have ever come across worldwide, and I have been searching for 35+ years and come across many sources. I just want to share my continued appreciation for your efforts, noting the quality of the pictures and thoughtfulness in capturing images of items and details that most people would never consider showing. I think your work will assist and inspire others for a long time to come. I have to be clear that the pictures all come from Brendon Deere's Facebook page for his collection and all credit is rightly his: I'm just aware not everyone uses Facebook and figured those folk may want to see the photos too. But I totally agree. To have this level of coverage of a restoration seems unprecedented to me and I am immensely thankful to Brendon for not just allowing us to see what's happening, but in such detail. You're doing an awesome thing posting this restoration here Zac. Other than using it to promote HR339 and the Society I use FB pretty sparingly and it's great to have this info curated here.

Just wish I had a little roped off area there to sit and watch or better still.... to be able to be the 'nipper' laboring and doing what I could to help in a minor capacity.

Somewhere there was a fascinating article about the redesign/redraughting work that the Packard company had to do on the Merlin to make it suitable for their mass production methods, which took IIRC nearly a year.
