That's the one, very much obliged Mr McFly - I was emailed it years ago and foolishly never saved it. Would you mind if I shared that on HR339's Facebook?
140 different threads on one engine. Staggering.

I second that. Didn't realize how much effort had gone into modifying the engine to suit US production, less of a "tooling up for" and more of a reverse engineering! I had heard a rumour that they had different threads between US & UK production, so it seems there is some truth to this. Still, 140 threads...

Met Jose at Temora when he was there for about a week or so. His knowledge is unsurpassed and what he has forgotten about Merlins is not worth knowing. Has a great sense of humour as well !!!

I knew that Packard redesigned the Merlin to make it much easier to mass produce, but I was not aware of just how much had to be done to make it possible.
Does the Packard Merlin produce different figures for power or wear or anything like that over a traditional hand-built Rolls Royce Merlin of the equivalent mark? Or did they manage to get it really right?
I have thought in the past how ingenious the design teams are who not only design all the intricate parts that go into an engine and make them all work perfectly together, but also how they have to design the tools to manufacture those parts and make that tooling all work perfectly and last a long time too, and they have to design the tools also for maintenance of the engines. When I start to think about it all, my mind boggles and I am sure every new engine design has to be a culmination of years of previous designs building up a corporate knowledge since time began.
That document also makes me wonder, were de Havilland and Bristol and Napier and the other engine designers and manufacturers all working to the same system as Rolls Royce on all of their engines - hand built, with slap dash drawings and relying on corporate knowledge to make it work?

Watched a YT vid recently of Elon Musk wandering around the SpaceX complex, and he commented something along the lines of "everyone gets excited about a new idea, and thinks its a wonderful thing, but that's only 1% of it. The other 99%, the real effort, and cost, is the manufacturing; not only the part, but the tools and plant to make the part. No one gets excited about this".

Wow, that is about the first thing i have seen Musk say that makes sense.

Just to step it up a notch with the RR Griffon...! That was a fascinating read. Reading the history of engine development and anything to do with engines really is a love of mine. Mainly the piston ones though, jets are not as exciting. Where did you find that about the Griffon?

In Stanley Hooker's autobiography he mentioned that one of the Rolls Royce design team went over and helped with Packard with the designs.

Loving it. Just wanted to turn to the next page and see more knowing there is no next page yet. This thread is keeping me sane in our (I think 13th) week of lockdown here in Sydney. Keep it coming.....
