Thanks Zac for posting all these great photos. Thanks also to Brendon for sharing the progress. Lots of good reference material for the next model project, once Gloria is finished.

Once again fantastic material! Thanks for all the work in sharing this, whether on Facebook or posted here. It is a fascinating process and I really appreciate the details shown. I wonder about the jigs...do you have master drawings or some such for these? Or do you use the original sub-assemblies and make the jig to fit these before stripping down?

You could eat your dinner of those engine parts. Its almost a pity to close it all up and hide it away.

You could eat your dinner of those engine parts. Its almost a pity to close it all up and hide it away. Back in the 50s and 60s one of the US model companies - Revell or Monogram? - made a "Phantom Mustang" model kit with the airframe parts moulded in clear plastic to allow you to see the bits inside. I wonder if anyone's attempted it in 1:1 scale?

And we nearly didn't have any mustangs! An Air Department Minute dated 24 February 1946 detailing the current fleet and intended retention/disposal summaries the Mustangs as follows: The 30 that were delivered from the cancelled order are stored uncrated at Hobsonville. At one stage it appeared possible that the aircraft would be assembled for the purpose of re-arming No.14 Squadron. (Corsairs were chosen instead) sic During the latter part of 1945 it was thought likely that the aircraft might be disposed to the NETHERLANDS EAST INDIES but nothing came of the matter. The question has been re-opened and all relevant information has been signalled to NZLO Melbourne. Fortunately for us this transfer never took place.

Peter, it is not open to the public. It never has been. Any visits are arranged privately through Brendon, and you must also pass the base security requirements.

Bloody marvellous....hopefully I can get back there and see what is happening with Brendon's approval before it is all done. To me the 'journey' is as good, if not better, than the roll-out. Wonder if the Ohakea team would be up for another one when 23 is completed ?
